What does everyone in the modern world need to know?

Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful?

Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

I was a little hesitant about Peterson because he is such a pop phenomenon, but I started with Maps of Meaning and realized how serious, honest and insightful of a thinker he is. I found the content in 12 Rules inspiring and helpful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to explore self, action and meaning.

Joyless. Generally negative vibe. Lecturing tone. I wasn’t moved to act in any helpful, positive way. Personal and research “stories” have interest but not inspiring.

Jordan’s book like his lectures are riveting and thought provoking, his voice is a bit dry but what he has to say is paramount in today’s world. He should never stop,

Very moving. Forced me to examine my life and strategize on how to become a better person. First Jordan Peterson book, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Plus I can refer to this one again and again to get back on track.

Good listen. Anyone who find this listen (book) joyless and negative is truly and unquestionably dead inside. Even my child was able to take something positive out of this.

Great lessons and advices for those who want to improve their life situations. I would say it is a life changing book and can change ones perspective towards certain situations in life. Listeners were able to get the full essence and emotions through the narration of the author himself.

Jordan has a sinscere way of talking. Listening to his words in his own voice delivered the meaning behind his literature. In his own voice you can feel how much he means what he has written, and how mich what he has written means to him.

Jordan Peterson is a delight, I am thankful for the impact he has made on my life. Listened to it at 1.3x speed and it's perfect, I think I'll read the hard copy as well so I can take notes.

Extremely complex and beyond the grasp of most people. BUT there is not one person who will not benefit from reading Jordan B’s rules. Much of getting to understand the most important aspects of life is within this book. I personally had to read it twice in order to comprehend as much as possible. Buy it and let Jordan B’s lovely voice take you away.

This book was a disappointment. Tends to veer significantly off topic and is very heavy on religious preaching and biblical references.

Thoroughly formulated and brilliantly articulated thoughts and analyses on the human condition with its oughts. Well worth the time.

I loved the book, it resonated with me, leaving plenty notes which I’ve transcribed on a word document for future revisiting . I’m not a native speaker, and I’m also not well lectured on the Bible stories, so I found it a bit hard to follow those parts, but the personal stories made up for that; I loved those , I can tell Peterson is trying his best to make these rules stick; in school , I find most of the teachers that suck or that sucked fail to provide students with useful analogies or real life applications or experiences that give the concept a dimension, so that words become something more than abstract containers .

I like Peterson I’ve probably watched hundreds of hours now of him on different platforms. So I thought the book would be something special, however in my opinion if you’ve heard one or two of Peterson’s interviews you’ve kind of heard it all. The book just goes on and on about human behavior but kind of in that 48 laws of power way where you’re like duhh that’s obvious. But maybe I’m just burnt out with the guys message. I am not hating on the guys book. But yeah it was a little mundane.

This enlightening book is replete with great insight into human nature, psychology, and cultural evolution. Understanding Peterson's twelve rules will surely help you navigate life's joys and travails and improve your relationships. His wisdom is profound. It's a challenging listen, however, because the author uses an academic vocabulary; his narrative can sometimes be complex and a bit confounding. You'll have to follow his narrative and diction closely to avoid being left behind. That said, I'm certainly going to read his other books.

I have read so many self-help books, they become redundant. This book surprised me. As a therapist that favors an existential approach, this book was a joy to read. I love the brutal honesty of the author. I would read it again and recommend it to others.

Peterson was one of my favourite teachers in undergrad, but I’m dissapointed in this book. For someone who used to have such a complex and full analysis of his subject matter, he seems to have fallen into black and white thinking characteristic of depression. We’re all individuals competing for simple dominance on a social hierarchy to win the evolutionary game. Not to say that this theory doesn’t hold water…but it’s too simple and focused on the individual. What about cooperation, social group cohesion, networks of collaboration to help the group as a whole. There is just as much research out there that supports this viewpoint as there is the individual lobster example.

didnt know it would be a bible loving book. crap

The title and chapter titles are a gimmick to get you to read/ listen to his opinions and boring personal life events. Even the few topics interesting (chaos vs order) are totally academic in nature and of no relation to tips on your own life. Book is a total ruse - an academic exercise. Read only if that is what you want- but be aware that’s what this is.

Enlightening. The parts that are based on the cases from the author's practice were excellent. My favorite were the last few rules.

I love JP but at times I found the book lacking the layman's terms required for a commute style listen where I couldn't readily ask Google to define a word I heard. This book was highly informative & I took away some profound ideas that have helped shapedy life for the better. It's too bad the ratings are out of 5 stars and not more specific (as I can rate either 100% satisfaction with 5 stars or 80% satisfaction with 4; neither accurately reflects my book review). I would prefer to rate the title as 9/10 and the narrator 9.5/10 . Overall, it's a worthwhile purchase at the $14.95 / 1 credit price. If your iffy on the price / book - I'd recommend starting with monthly audiobook club called something like "Best Picks" where you get a more than satisfactory amount of titles to listen to in EVERY genre for a month. Then you can get your money's worth before committing to the personal development genre / $14.95 for a single title. At least you get to keep this once you buy it though!
