Unabridged Audiobook
America's War for the Greater Middle East, by Andrew J. Bacevich, is an excellent history of the US involvement in the region from the establishment of Israel in 1948 to the present. It lays a detailed foundation for understanding how the wars and turmoil involving the US in the Middle East are related and, in effect, constitute the longest war in US history. Every US administration, from Jimmy Carter's to the present has had faith that military solutions would help create stability in the Middle East. But peace is no closer now than when Carter first sent in the US Navy to protect access to Persian Gulf oil. For anyone who believes that "they hate us for our freedoms" this book provides a far more plausible explanation.
