Summary
Anthem is set in a distant collectivist future, when every form and emblem of individualism have been erased and society has reverted to a preindustrial level. In this novella, as many of her writings, Ayn dramatizes her philosophy of Objectivism in the main character. Its hero is a scientist in a world where the pursuit of knowledge is a crime, and he struggles against the established society to discover the meaning of individual freedom.

Loved everything about it! Such an interesting and enjoyable book! Stirred my thoughts and emotions! Excellent narration... beautifully interpreted! And the author captured my attention right from the start and totally pulled me into the story. It felt as if there I was also, beside the main character, as chapter by chapter, gradually more and more details were revealed and discoveries were made, right up until the glorious final two chapters. What a delight! They gave me some shivers down my spine! It was like seeing and hearing and feeling fireworks shooting up into the sky on the 4th of July, while sitting near, with the launching area in view, and feeling such excitement and anticipation during the slight delay that occurs just before they finally shoot their beautifully coloured lights into the darkness! Deeply moving! Enjoyed it immensely!

This story's culture will be our culture unless we each stand up for ourSELF. Great reminder and a must read for teens.

PHIL GREY A beautiful glimpse into the DIRECTION our society is heading, unless through study, and history, and thought we learn to fully grasp the difference in WE versus I.

To Emma: With respect, I think when you're talking about true equality you have to take it to that extreme, it has to be that way. That's one of many reasons why it's a fairly tale and can't possibly work. I think it's genius that she wrote it this way.

Presented some thought-provoking ideas, but the writing is a bit clunky and disjointed. I think the story and the concepts would be better understood and grasped if actually read vs. listened to on audio. This just didn't quite grip me as I had hoped it would.

This is a good book for political theory, and would be recommended for anybody embracing the left-leaning politics of today, and the destruction of the human spirit it brings with it. While it is no Atlas Shrugged (highly recommended), it's a fairly decent book.

This novelette is a great introduction to the work of Ayn Rand. She introduces many of the concepts that are explored in detail in her longer works. Highly recommended.

I was concerned that this book might be too "deep" for my liking, but I really enjoyed it. It was very thought-provoking. This novel made me thankful to live in a free country and to be able to seek opportunity and growth individually "and" collectively.

A little too much of a parable, too much symbolism, not based in reality enough for me.

This is a timeless book that should be required reading in schools. Its great for anyone age 11 and up. It is the clearest, most concise, portrayal of Ayan Rand's vision of a free world where ability determins what a person deserves, not need. A world where man is held above all things as holy. Move on to Atlas Shrugged after this one if you liked it.

My first Ayn Rand novel...definitely not the last!! It was thought-provoking, written in beautiful prose and unforgettable in both theme and plot. I had to go to the library and check the out book so I wouldn't have to sit in my car just to finish the last cd.

I read this book with much intensity when I was a young man. I just finished listening to it at age 57. It means a great deal more to me now. It is not light reading (listening) but I think it is one of Ayn Rands best works. As a result of listening to the CD I am going to purchase the book.
