Summary
The essential universe, from our most celebrated and beloved astrophysicist.

What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There’s no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and bestselling author Neil deGrasse Tyson.

But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

While waiting for your morning coffee to brew, or while waiting for the bus, the train, or the plane to arrive, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry will reveal just what you need to be fluent and ready for the next cosmic headlines: from the Big Bang to black holes, from quarks to quantum mechanics, and from the search for planets to the search for life in the universe.

This is a book I will listen to more than once. You can learn something new every time you hear it.

I actually thought it was an excellent book but way too short to explain what Astrophysics is all about. Narration was excellent. To go through such intense information, 10 chapters lasting a total of three hours is just too brief. I truly enjoy NDT but this could have easily been another 10 hours of explaining what it was he was talking about. I did enjoy though!

So much info in such a short amount of time. Mind blowing wouldn’t be a phrase that does it justice!!!

NDT for President!!!! Great book for a beginner, he does a great job of adding perspective.

Loved the narration, really great book, loved the idea that life could’ve started on mars then seeded on earth, loved the ego diminishing part at the end. Not my usual reading, but absolutely worthy of stepping out of my comfort zone.

Loved the book but just like a sllice if the best chovolate cake yoy have ever had, it leaves u wanting for more. Carl Sagan and Neil De Grasse Tyson two of my favorites.

Amazing book.

Profile Avatar Dan S Jun 2017

Fascinating read. Could have done without a few unnecessary curse words (that's the reason for the 4 stars) but other than that a fantastic book. This information really supports my belief in a Creator.

An absolutely beautiful listen. Worth every penny. I wish it'd keep going but I guess that's what his Cosmos book is for. I highly recommend this.

This is my favorite book

Profile Avatar Aaron C. Dec 2018

This book was an absolute pleasure. The narration by the author was easy to listen to and quite engaging. This book covered what I assume to be the very basics of astrophysics and left me yearning for more.

Profile Avatar James R. Oct 2018

Great book but much too short.

Profile Avatar Trinity S. Jul 2018

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was pleasant to listen to, and I like the fact it was read by the author. It was a lot of info to take in, but I think the author did a good job at explaining everything. I will most likely listen to this book again.

Profile Avatar Leanne R. Feb 2021

I have to admit some of this was over my head (I think I need a second listen) but a wonderful introduction to astrophysics. Thanks NGT

Profile Avatar Simone P. Feb 2021

I love this guy!! It’s an amazing book.

I enjoyed Cosmos more as it discussed many more topics and explained the concepts better. This book is shorter and many terms and concepts are still too complex. I always enjoy watching Neil DeGrasse Tyson on TV, esp on Cosmos, as he has a bigger than life personality, so happy he narrated the book.

I really enjoyed the digestibility of this book. Lately it seems that all I can do is work, sleep, write some and dick around on the internet. I'm also coming closer to an ADD diagnosis, so listening to this book on audio was a big help for me. I've always been a person of words and I always will be, so my cashier-level math skills weren't turned off by this book. Tyson outlines and explains the Big Bang, quasars, dark matter, dark energy, chemistry, aliens, and more topics in a very palatable way. It left me wanting more, and he says at the beginning that this book is a syllabus to advance my reading of astrophysics. We live in a very bizarre universe that's worth exploring, and he outlines the billions of years of history, ideas, and scientific theories that comprise its nature. I've always been fascinated by the Big Bang and the birth and the nature of the universe. Being raised religious only raised my fascination, as seven days of creation fucked up by a talking Disney snake was never a satisfying explanation for why everything exists. Tyson explains, first and foremost, that the true and much more interesting process was made of random cataclysms between particles over the course of billions of years. My child brain sighed in relief that the stars wouldn't send me to hell for being gay. In the beginning but more so at the end, Tyson explains how our selfish prejudices hold us back from a cosmic understanding. I enjoyed his idea that the cosmos that should comfort us rather than shrink us, and we should feel like a part of the ballroom instead of shying away into its corners. This book was short and digestible, and left me wanting more. Astrophysics for People in a Hurry is a great starter book for those looking to explore our understanding of the universe even more.

Profile Avatar Joseph H. Dec 2020

covered the big topics they mention on Big Bang Theory. He has a good sense of humor

Profile Avatar Davide M. Dec 2020

I love Neil DeGrasse Tyson, but his reading of his book can put youto sleep Make sure you’re paying full attention because missing a phrase or two can get you totally lost.

Profile Avatar Ken A. Oct 2020

This a GREAT appetizer into the wonderful world of Astrophysics I'm now hungry to learn so much more!!!

Profile Avatar Lauren C. Jul 2020

Worth a re-listen

Profile Avatar Justin S. Apr 2020

Interesting. Although over my head my bit, got a good understanding of how everything came together

Profile Avatar Steve M. Feb 2020

Neil explains the concepts very top-line but ALL of the root concepts are there. YES it goes fast but... read the title. It is SO great to have a scientist lay out the salient points to get familiar with a heady topic quickly. I think all readers (listeners) know they are only getting the tip of the tip of the iceberg... but... it is SOOoooo cool.

Profile Avatar Corrie G. Aug 2019

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is the David Attenborough if the cosmos, this book is not added to the list of things you must experience to really know your place in the universe.

Profile Avatar Chris W. Oct 2018

I thought it was very well presented, and the authour reading his own work is always a nice touch, but he lost me at the end when he went far-left political on me... Keep science in the realm of science and political optics in the realm of fantasy where they belong. Thanks. NDT is a great advocate and presenter in his field, and is an excellent source for bringing subjects like astrophysics and cosmology to the layperson. He is well suited to this reading.

Profile Avatar Gilbert S Dec 2017

Great book. Love the narration by the coolest astrophysicist on the planet. Unfortunately, as much as I tried, I do not have the education or capacity for this book. I know it’s called “Astrophysics for people in a hurry,” but I had such a difficult time following along. Recommend you watch “Cosmos” on Netflix then try divulging into this book. Might give you baseline to work with. Good luck
