THE BLOCKBUSTER HIT—Over two million copies sold! A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller

“Poignant, engrossing.”—People • “Lisa Wingate takes an almost unthinkable chapter in our nation’s history and weaves a tale of enduring power.”—Paula McLain

Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

This was the most fabulous book and the narration was so touching. I had no idea that this was historical fiction prior to listening to it and recommend this highly! I usually only listen in the car and had to find excuses to get into the car as it neared the end!

Fascinating story and scary because it actually happened since many cases. The book was so well-written I felt like I knew these people intimately! I got through it very quickly and was very sad when it was over

Great narration on this book. The story was split in two time periods going back and forth every other chapter. The earlier time framed chapters were much better written and far more interesting. The reader really made you feel like the child in the story was actually telling you her story from her 12 year old perspective. The later time period chapters sounded like a Hallmark story, unfortunately. But every other chapter was so good, it was well worth the listen. I love historical fiction books and this was a good one!

So achingly sad and heartbreaking that this actually occurred not so long ago. The story is of course fiction but it parallels the sad reality of greed and exploitation. It’s narrated beautifully. One of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.

I am in the minority here but this book was very difficult to finish. Many parts dragged ridiculously long and it seemed the author was just filling pages. I quit the book 2 times but I hate not finishing what I start so I continued. I still don’t have a mental picture of what the characters look like even though I am 30 minutes from the end. I felt the author used too many metaphors. I guess it just wasn’t my style. I thought the narration was great though.

A compelling and tragic story about the Tennessee Children’s Home, a piece of history which needs to see the light of day so it will not be repeated. Excellent, allowing the characters to come alive, as the book moves from tragedy to some healing as a few of the children reunite as adults. The

I loved this book! I personally am friends with a lady whose mom had been one of the children there and this was an excellent depiction of what she may have gone through! Sadly not all of the parts who bought these babies really should have been parents at all and it didn't always get better for some of the children when they left the home, or at least in my friends mom's case.

This is one of those books that you become completely engrossed in and can’t wait to know what becomes of the characters. Then you’re sad when it’s over because you are committed to them! This won't make my top ten of all time list but it is definitely worth reading. The author does a beautiful job of describing some almost undefinable emotions for the little girl. Parts are hard to hear but so intriguing that I was riveted. I love how the story weaves back and forth between the two main characters. I didn't give it 5 stars because the story of the older girl (Avery) took on too much of a Hallmark/Jody Picoult, sappy, predictability that was not up to the quality or creativity of the other half. The narration by both readers was superb. I put it below the level of 'Crawdads' but above almost anything by Picoult. I hope you enjoy it.

This book was fantastic. I just wish it touched a little more on the history of Gabion. I was not informed of the events of the Georgia Tann before this read. The description of the operation of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society made me sick to my stomach. After reading this, I did research on Miss Tann. This woman knew exactly what she was doing. She went to law school and passed the bar while following in her father footsteps. Her father was known as a dominating force while holding a career as a Judge. She used connections to begin child trafficking. This book was by far one of my favorites. My heart goes out to all who were affected by this woman. I will hold these children and families in my heart.

I tried, I really did, but I just could not enjoy the writing enough to move past the beginning. I found it simplistic and predictable, and the narration excruciatingly slow. I’m from the south and I understand the pace of comfortable language in the culture, but I had to listen at 1.25 speed just to make it as far along as I did. I feel like I wasted money on this one…

This book was touching, horrifying, sad, happy - all in one. I cannot believe that I was not aware of this society and what they did to families/children. I am hoping to find the documentary they discuss at the end of the book. The author wrote in a way that made you feel like you were there watching/witnessing and the narrator did the same. Reminded me of Sarah's Key - have not enjoyed a book as much since that one. A part of history that all should be aware of. Highly recommend.

Amazing! I found myself fully engulfed in their lives and trying to figure out how it all tied together. I love the two narrator's voices...helps differentiate between the two main characters stories. While listening to the story I could not fathom how people could have lived these lives and how inhumane some of them were. And then I would remind myself it was fiction...but it wasn't! I hated her even more when I heard that. Such a great story!

This is one of those stories where the author switches between two tales and you know there must be some connection. It keeps you in suspense. Like another reviewer, I usually only listen in the car, but for this book, I pulled out the ear buds and listened on my phone every chance I got. Excellent tale. I was particularly interested to learn this work of fiction was based on a history I had never heard of. At the end, the author suggests several resources for further historical research and I plan to explore them.

Struggled with the Avery character and narrator - character seems shallow and unrealistic - and the narrator just didn't do it for me. Maybe with a different narrator - or just reading instead of listening I wouldn't have struggled with the Avery character so much. Loved the Rill/Mae character and narrator. Felt like it presented a very good perspective on the way a 12 yr old would rationalize things. Struggled with a couple of times in the book where it talked about brothers and sisters - just poor editing - things like that drive me crazy.

Profile Avatar
Landee L

At first I couldn't stop talking about how interesting and moving the story was. The voice of Rill is authentic, fierce, and loving. I felt her inside of my heart. I tolerated Avery because she was seeking to solve a mystery., but over time her constantly wistful, uncertain, needy voice made me just get through it to get back to Rill. Avery did not feel like a real person. I was totally annoyed with her constant questions to herself where she judges every single thought she has. Rill made Georgia Tann terrifying and beleiveable. Avery made her mother by comparison seem too snooty to be real. I loved half of this book very much and thought it was brilliant. . The other half was a chore.

I have listened to many many books, by far one of my all time favorites. The narrators were also excellent.

I enjoyed the chapters about the young river children better than the adult Avery chapters even though those chapters tied the generations and story together. Those chapters seemed to degrade Avery and were very predictable. I still gave it a 4 for the history of the "adoptions." I never realized this occurred and for such a long period of time!

Overall a good and captivating read. A little predictable and cheesy for my taste.

This was a great book. The narrator did a very nice job on characters voices. I did not want to get out of car. The best book in a very long time.

Very easy to envelope yourself into the story. It switches seamlessly between childhood and a future generation. Makes you anxious to learn the "in between".

I really have enjoyed listening to this mysterious, riveting book. The characters are so real that I find myself thinking about them and mentally hearing the narrator's voices. Its a very good listen read by. Two awesome narrator's. I lived in Memphis as a child in the 1950's. It was very descriptive of places and brought back memories of this dark time when we weren't aware of such evilness.
