Unabridged Audiobook
Citizen 865 was more than a well-researched history, it also had all the elements of a great detective story as the Office of Special Investigations sought to prove connection of American citizens to atrocities committed in Poland during World War Two. Coupled with a narrative of survivors, the book succeeded in bringing to life a not often-visited corner of the Holocaust, Trawniki Camp, and the role of the Ukrainian collaborators enlisted by the Germans. Well worth the time invested.
Excellent book. Small caveat. I expected the book to be about the hunt and prosecution of Nazi war criminals who slipped into America unnoticed, and it was. A substantial amount of the book describes events in the Holocaust in graphic terms, and that's okay. I just wasn't expecting it. Everyone should revisit the mass murder and the indignities suffered by innocent men, women and children in the Holocaust. This book details some of the atrocities the Polish people suffered. The descriptions of a few Polish people who managed to survive is heartbreaking but necessary to remind us that we must be vigilant to prevent it happening again.
