Summary
Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the U.S. effort, sending messages back and forth in an unbreakable code that used their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with their code, they saved countless American lives. Yet their story remained classified for more than twenty years.

But now Joseph Bruchac brings their stories to life for young adults through the riveting fictional tale of Ned Begay, a sixteen-year-old Navajo boy who becomes a code talker. His grueling journey is eye-opening and inspiring. This deeply affecting novel honors all of those young men, like Ned, who dared to serve, and it honors the culture and language of the Navajo Indians.

An ALA Best Book for Young Adults

This book was so informative and easy to listen to. I had no idea about code talkers and it’s a shame they weren’t given the respect and appreciation that they deserved.

Excellent book. A huge part of USA history in WWII Pacific theater. It also provides a clear picture of how the USA treated indigenous people in the country. Very closely linked to the deep racism in the country. I pray this will open peoples eyes and hearts and try to change how we treat one another. The narrator does a wonderful job.

Excellent book! I read it years ago and reread it, this time screening it for my students. I will definitely have my middle-schoolers read this next year when we study American history and WWII.

The reading of the book was a homework for my son. Since I've not read the book, and don't have time to actually sit down and read it, decided to get it here... loved it!! And my son loves it too!! Not only I'll be able to help my child with his homework, but I've learned a lot while enjoying a good 'history' class. I know it is a novel, but many details are not novel, are facts.
