Daring, honest, and written with the comic scrutiny and unqualified affection that marks Franzen's fiction, The Discomfort Zone tells of the formation of one young mind in the crucible of an everyday American family.

While Franzen's tale had its moments of brilliance such as when he returned to empty his childhood home, there were also long, tedious dissertations about Charlie Brown's Peanuts cartoons and bird watching. When Franzen is open and honest about himself and his family he is never better, but this memoir was too frequently smug and arrogant and refusing to get to the things that really matter.
