Summary
Don Perkins led a life as one of the most honored athletes in the history of the University of New Mexico and the Dallas Cowboys. But Perkins's life was far more complex and, at times, controversial. He experienced the traumas of racial discrimination, death, divorce, football-related injuries, and a never-ending search for his own identity. In his search, Perkins ventured into sportscasting, public speaking, community relations, big-rig trucking, government work, and even amateur theater, where he portrayed Frederick Douglass and other famous Black leaders. Through it all, he remained a kind, unassuming, charismatic man, universally admired by family members, friends, and millions of fans. Don Perkins: A Champion's Life is the final tribute he so greatly deserves.

The life of football great Don Perkins is put into proper perspective by author Richard Meltzer. The book chronicles the former Dallas Cowboy's struggles with racism, poverty, and in later life, dementia. As detailed in the book, Perkins was encouraged to avoid interracial relationships as it could have a negative impact on his educational and academic aspirations. Perkins wanted to play college football in his home state of Iowa, but was shunned, and recruited by the University of New Mexico, and was coached by future Super Bowl head coach Marv Levy. The subject's likeability is discernible in Meltzer's well researched book. The author details the many phases on "Perk's" memorable journeys after football, such as dabbling in politics, the broadcast booth, and acting. In addition to Meltzer's entertaining storytelling, Bill Andrew Quinn provides superlative narration.
