Després de l'accident d'en Henry amb un tren de mercaderies, quan anava en direcció al continent, en Sir Topham Hatt ha de buscar un substitut per portar els vagons fins al dipòsit. Quan li dóna la feina a en James, en Thomas s'enfada. Per què no l'ha seleccionat a ell? Desitjava tant ser el tren escollit que decideix transportar els vagons abans que pugui fer-ho en James. Només ha de solucionar un petit problema: no sap com arribar al seu destí. Aconseguirà arribar al dipòsit de mercaderies? Què diran en James i en Sir Topham Hatt quan descobreixin el que ha fet?
