The discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed 'To Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine', offers a small medieval castle for rent, above a bay on the Italian Riviera.
Four very different women - the dishevelled and downtrodden Mrs Wilkins, the sad, sweet-faced Mrs Arbuthnot, the formidable widow Mrs Fisher and the ravishing socialite Lady Caroline Dester - are drawn to the shores of the Mediterranean that April. As each, in turn, blossoms in the warmth of the Italian spring and finds their spirits stirring, quite unexpected changes occur.

The Enchanted April, published in 1922, is a witty and delightful depiction of what it is like to rediscover joy.

'This delicious confection will work its magic on all' Daily Telegraph

Delightful, frothy comedy, some of the observations of character are hilarious, and despite Elizabeth Von Arnim having written the book in early 1920’s still fresh, surprisingly so, a period piece but to me not much dated. It all ends well, not sure totally convincingly but why not: the seemingly silliest of the characters, with ebullient good will and belief in the healing powers of happiness ( in her mind exuded by the Palazzo where all the characters eventually converge) overrides all sorts of human frailties and craven behaviour. The book has made me want to (1) see the film and (2) stay in a palazzo by the Mediterranean.
