A haunting debut novel about a mixed-race family living in 1970s Ohio and the tragedy that will either be their undoing or their salvation

Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet …

So begins the story in this exquisite debut novel about a Chinese American family living in a small town in 1970s Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’ case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.

When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. James, consumed by guilt, sets out on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to find a responsible party, no matter what the cost. Lydia’s older brother, Nathan, is certain the neighborhood bad boy Jack is somehow involved. But it’s the youngest of the family, Hannah, who observes far more than anyone realizes—and who may be the only one who knows the truth about what happened.

A profoundly moving story of family, history, and the meaning of home, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, exploring the divisions between cultures and the rifts within a family and uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Sophomoric writing of a story that lacks depth and complexity.

So, I read “Little Fires Everywhere” and loved it so much that I couldn’t wait to listen to this book. It was well written but it was the most depressing book that I’ve ever read or listened to.

This was a sad story about a mixed-race family who loved each other but we're ill-equipped to help themselves. Society made matters worse that is still true most of the time. However, it is well written and narrated with good characterizations and details. It was a real story without the fluff of happily ever after fancies.

This book, “Everything I Never Told You” brings up bad mother-daughter memories. Often it is our inability to express our hurt that makes hurl the easiest insult. “You married a Chinese man I will no longer talk to you!” Instead of saying, “Oh darling, you quit school. I know are excited now, but your heart was set on being a doctor. When the excitement settles--and it will, you will still want to be a doctor. It will be so hard for you to become a doctor then. It is hard for me to be happy with you. I am sad. I can’t show you I’m sad on your wedding day.” My mom felt the same way. I quit school to get married as well. The happy news was that for me it ended well. I was tangled in blankets and discombobulated. Mom helped me calm down enough to sort the covers out and set up the laptop. We can still talk. I love Cassandra Campbell's narrations; she is wonderful. This book was mediocre and rambling. Still, there was lots of good insight into family dysfunction.

bored, liveless, stereotyping, all description no conversation. I heard to learn English.
