Summary
On the very first day of 2019 a ten-year-old girl is found murdered in a backyard in Odense, Denmark. Her body is set up as a morbid work of art; a detailed copy of the final scene in H. C. Andersen's fairy tale; The Little Match Girl; crippled, frozen to death, crunching a pile of burned-out matches. This is the starting point for one of Denmark's most macabre murder cases. A case that quickly attracts the attention of the world press and ignites a fear throughout the Danish population; is there a serial killer at stake, and will there be more 'works of art?'

I got this book as one of the free VIP reads so I didn’t expect much, but it is was very good - well written with a good mystery that kept you guessing.

Very ominous and well written, an excellent read! The narrator did a superb job, though I wish there had been longer pauses between character switching. Otherwise, the twisted concept was a disturbing but refreshing new plot that kept me intrigued and captivated. Best thriller I’ve listened to in months!

So I really loved the story. But the fact that there were no chapter breaks killed me.

Loved it and looking forward to the next

Very well written and good storyline. I thought the narrator was great, as well.

I really liked it and looked for more from this author.

Profile Avatar Ronni D. Apr 2025

I really enjoyed this book and would have given it 5 stars except for the last few minutes when the reader is left wondering what will happen next. The narrator was wonderful and I will be looking for more books he narrates.

Great book. Unbelievable how the twisted minds work

Profile Avatar NurseAppel Mar 2025

It was a good storyline, however, there are no chapters so the entire story is like one giant run-on sentence. The transition from character or scene all ran together, so you really had to be paying attention to follow who and what they were talking about at all times. The narrator did a good job and overall was worth a listen.

It was a decent book, good story. Though, the random switch to separate characters wasn’t all that great to keep up with.

I got this as a VIP bonus but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the story and the narrator. Well worth a credit.

I really enjoyed this book, and having been to the city where it’s set, was able to imagine the areas and this added to the story

Great stuff

Profile Avatar Sharon H. Sep 2024

I got this book as a freebie so I had no expectations. It was good, not great but good.

Profile Avatar Osman Raidhan Sep 2024

A great and somewhat gruesome crime thriller. The characters are well explored and storyline is great. Narration is great also

Profile Avatar Rinda M. Sep 2024

Really good listening! Kept me wanting to know more so I listened to this book the fastest I've ever done!

Profile Avatar Maggi B. Sep 2024

The story was interesting, but I felt the ending dragged on a bit too much.

Profile Avatar Kassandra S. Aug 2024

great book. slow at first with a very fast ending

Profile Avatar jeverright Aug 2024

I grabbed this at random. Quite often this way of choosing a book can burn you!! I was more than surprised. The development and initially slow development of characters picked up in pace but went just slow enough to keep you yearning for more! The writers sly deception slowly casting suspicion on several characters kept me guessing start to finish. And child murder based on kids tales was something out of Sherlock Holmes! Excellent

Profile Avatar Pol Reamonn Aug 2024

Excellent story and narration kept me gripped throughout. Scandi-noir has never been on my radar but this might change for me.

I stopped, listening to this book halfway through because the gratuitous violence was ridiculous. And they went into graphic detail, describing how these young girls were tortured, and the horrible deaths they suffered, and I just can’t take it especially when it’s kids. I listen to a lot of murder mysteries, but this was just unnecessary over the top violence. And I couldn’t help but thinking this story could be giving some psycho that’s out there some new ideas! I pretty much hated it for that reason

Well written, kept me interested and looking forward to what comes next. I loved it.

Profile Avatar shaynanikole Jul 2024

Sometimes the story was hard to follow because without warning or chapter breaks, you'd go from Dina's story to Tom's, or something similar. Needs to be broken up better. Aside from that, the narrators was absolutely amazing and the story was really good. Sad and difficult to listen to, especially as a parent, but really well written. 1

I really enjoyed this book. kept me guessing for once.

Profile Avatar David G. Jul 2024

An engaging novel, marred only by a few "It was only a dream" scenes and a concluding hour of verbiage that this listener breezed through at 2x speed. Once the reveal is made—in this case the murderer's identity uncovered—novelists must be quick, quick like bunnies to end their stories because the question that intrigued the listener—whodunnit?—has been resolved. This novel demanded a two-minute epilogue at best.

Profile Avatar Nelia Burger Jul 2024

did not like the narrator, but a good story that keeps you guessing the whole time

Profile Avatar Ian A Jul 2024

Wonderfully written, keeps you getting until the end.

Profile Avatar KHolton May 2024

Great mystery that turns at all the right moments. Narrator did well at feeling the story, but does have some awkward pausing. Highly recommended.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2024

Well-written book- it kept me guessing on who was the killer (s). The narrator was great!! 4 stars because it jumped between narratives abruptly so sometimes it got a little confusing which storyline I was following. Other than that, I really like this book!

Profile Avatar Nettyham Feb 2024

Really great story! The characters are really strong and just the right amount of gore. Can we have another in this series please!! Keeps you guessing with a few twists and turns!

Profile Avatar trichia Chaput Feb 2024

Great story really good narrator. Hoping for a sequel

Profile Avatar Trish P. Jan 2024

Held me spellbound, trying to guess the killers name.

Profile Avatar Egle Z. Dec 2023

The book is quite good. It ends with a little cliffhanger as it was planned as the first in the series. The next book will most likely never happen because the authors split up. Please be aware that it might contain some triggers, for instance torture of children.

Profile Avatar Jurgita Ziabkinaite Nov 2023

A fantastic crime story. I liked it very much.

Profile Avatar Jbusta Oct 2023

Excellent read

Profile Avatar Michael Hayes Oct 2023

Pretty good read. Kept me guessing.

Profile Avatar Sherry L. Sep 2023

Brilliant authors. This story is not for the weak of stomach. I was enthralled all the way through. So wished there were more by Sanne and Brian. Narrator is excellent.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2023

It was interesting, and not bad for a VIP read, but towards the end the plot felt a bit forced and contrived. I also wish there had been longer pauses in narration when the point of view switched from one character to another.
