Summary
Vast legions of gods, mages, humans, dragons and all manner of creatures play out the fate of the Malazan Empire in this first book in a major epic fantasy series

The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze.

However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

Conceived and written on a panoramic scale, Gardens of the Moon is epic fantasy of the highest order--an enthralling adventure by an outstanding new voice.

What a PHENOMENAL book!! The narrator did a great job making me believe it was different characters and the book itself kept me wondering what was going to happen next! I look forward to reading/listening to this series, as I WILL finish it! Great job Mr. Erikson and the narrator!

I can see how someone might enjoy this. The pacing is unbearable. The pacing is killing me. The narrator is good, but his accent and inflection alongside the recording sounds make this something I can't finish. I wish I could get a refund.

Worth the time and patience. Slow to start but the wait was well worth the build-up. I'm more than just interested in this series and (due partially to the wonderful voice of the reader) will finish.

This is the first book in the most EPIC fantasy series I’ve ever read. For so many reasons it takes the cake. Just know that it is somewhat confusing at first and kind of feels like it starts in the middle of a book and you have no idea what’s going on. Just keep going, as everything begins to unfold it will all begin to tie together. Keep in mind this is a massive ten book series so there’s much for the author to set the scene for.

Good story, great characters, some characters endings in this book made no sense or where left in Cliff hangers. I hope to see them in the other books or to be explained later

Great narrator. Fantastic world-building and attention to detail in the story. Found it slightly hard-going at times due to a lack of context and too many characters. However, the complexity is a real plus, despite some periods of not knowing exactly what's happening. Looking forward to reading more.

2 hours into the read and I find it extremely hard to follow the story and paint a picture of the world in my head. There is zero character introductions and it seems to be jumping all over the place. Hard to find motivation to keep reading.

Had to come back to this because they ruined the entire series by switching narrators after memories of ice. What a piss poor decision, you can’t get 120 hours into characters with certain voice sounds and pronouncements and then switch it…

If you are ready for an epic fantasy this is it! Take your time and yes rewind if needed, it’s worth it’ - Erikson is building a world and complex characters. Lister does a fantastic job of narrating, love when he does a ‘laugh or snicker’ gives the scene a realistic feel. Downloading book 2 now. Last thought - stick with the book you will be rewarded!
