Summary
With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender's Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown's genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within. A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown's continuing status as one of fiction's most exciting new voices.

I am loving this author. The characters are engaging, story plot unpredictable and thrilling. This book is oh so addicting, I didn't want it to be finished. Can't wait for the next book. Also the narration is on point makes characters easy to follow.

Great story concept, well developed and engaging characters, and the sci fi action is thrilling. No anticlimax here! However, as much as i appreciate laying bear the complex darkness of mankind, its taken to an extreme here. Ive only reached the end of the second book so im hoping it will balance out. But as it stands its feel hopeless and frustrating to the point of pulling you out of the story and needing to distance yourself from the characters youre supposed to feel for. Eventually i was able to start predicting the next betrayal and death of the innocent. I need to take a break before trying on the next book, but if it keeps digging its heals into the repetitive depressive violent horror it was so heavy handed with in this one i cant finish the series for my own mental health. Thats said, it does feel highly appropriate for the times we’re in. Maybe thats what makes it hit home a little too hard.

I love sci fi / fantasy but expect the best in writing, plot, character development etc growing up on LOR, GOT, Hobbit, Pern series and anything by J Butcher. This novel was far and away better than the first. I had to force myself to finish that one as the Institute began to feel like pointless violence. I am so glad I did!! Will be going on to book3 immediately!

I have listened to sooo many book series over the years and the Red Rising series has topped them all! The new graphic audio adaptations are a “must listen” for any fan of the series.

The narrator is great— easy to listen to and excellent at differentiating the voices of the many characters. I’m a fan of this series and loved Red Rising, but this book dragged a lot toward the end. I’m still in it for another book though. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys dystopian sci-fi and fans of Warhammer 40K.

Not as amusing as the first book. Various plot lines repeat itself, the killed off characters get replaced by more of the same, the scenes sometimes just repeat scenes from famous classical books. The characterisations are as bland as the names of the characters, so I kept mixing them up. There are some adventures, but by now it's very easy to guess how they were going to end. The narrator was as fine as ever.

Amazing. Since finishing it I’ve been looking for another series to grab me like the red rising collection has. I can’t wait to finish the 6th book. The narrator nails Darrow’s passion and changes the experience.

A truly fantastic book (series), And the narrator is superb. My son and I have listened to the first two books on our way to various activities, and often we decide at the end we would rather have listened then do the activity LOL highly recommend We can’t wait to start the third!

Comparing this series, I have finished the first two, to the Hunger Games does Mr. Brown’s work a disservice. Much better character development, story line, morality examination. Excellent story telling!!!!

"Golden Son" was a wild ride. I had to pay attention to shifting alliances. It required reading "Red Rising" to appreciate the nuances. There was family, love, war, and a lot of politics. It is worth a second read. I am off to read the sequel, "Morning Star."

If you are turned off by Darrow acting like a terrorist, hang in there. Things turn around and we find the same Darrow you come to love in Red Rising.

This book's fast-paced writing style makes it perfect to listen to as an audiobook--I couldn't stop listening! The narrator is also really excellent. I recommend listening at 1.5x speed.

First, let me say that I find the voice of the protagonist to be very emotional and beautiful. I don't know, however, if this is due to the writing or due to the fact that the narrator is simply outstanding. He embodies the voice of Darrow, gives it so much depth and feeling. And since most of the book is in Darrows voice, it has quite an impact. Pierce Brown writes the emotional, loving parts extremely well. It definitely hits a cord. However, I found large parts of this book to be almost boring. For some reason, I couldn't really get into the battle scenes and I'm not a big fan of politics, which is what this book is based on. But I do feel that the characters are developed and round, having inner conflicts and flaws. The problem is, it sometimes makes them unrelatable. For the most part, Darrow's relationships with the other characters simply drove me into sadness and frustration. It's weird, it's almost as if this book is bipolar. Some parts of it are heartfelt and gripping, while others are just cruel and violent and tedious. I am left with mixed feelings about this book. Having said that, it definitely gets you feeling something, and it kind of stays with you. 3.5 stars from me.

This book will have your adrenaline going from the moment you start listening until the end. I thought my girlfriend was going to break up with while I was hooked on this book, just walking around the house with earbuds in living on Mars and listening to the REAPER, the Helldiver of Lykos change the tides for all colors.
