Summary
A millionaire is taken suddenly ill, and sensing his mortality, he asks his attorney to do him one last favor—to find and secretly watch over his missing niece, the daughter of his profligate deceased sister. This niece at the appropriate time would become heir to his millions. However, the millionaire is mysteriously murdered, stabbed to death in his sick bed. Oliva Cresswell, the unsuspecting niece, has been a cashier in a large West End store for five years when she meets a Mr. Beale, a self-described wheat merchant, is attacked in her flat and rescued by this Mr. Beale, is offered a job as his confidential secretary, refuses him, is unexplainably sacked and finds herself in need of his offer. The mysteries multiply and deepen as the story proceeds. (Introduction by Don W. Jenkins)

Honestly, at first I considered abortion! I wasn't sure that I enjoyed the narrator's voice. Before the first chapter was over, I was captured, by the story AND the narrator! I love the way he performed the female voices. This book was a perfect mystery, with a love story, an evil villain, with an awful intention, and the subtle comedy had me laughing out loud, several times! A truly great work of literature. And the performance; endearing!

Ran Mattison... enjoyable story, believable characters, not super suspenseful but enough to keep you interested, with a dose of humor thrown in. A few words mispronounced, but not enough to be a distraction or mess up the story.

Loved this book. I’m not convinced by the marriage but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And a fantastic narration. One of the best audiobooks I’ve heard.

This mystery kept me guessing what was going to happen next. I enjoyed it. My first Edgar Wallace. The narrator did well.

The narration takes a bit of getting use to but you have to be grateful for the volunteer narrators. I enjoy these old literary classics. Great free books.

Enjoyed it very much!

How can you not like a free book? This is another book from the past, that takes me to a simpler, slower paced place. It does not have the fast pace of a Clive Cussler thriller, but I very much enjoy the descriptions and language of another time. I appreciate having this option when I am out of credits.

I've been looking forward to this book for a while only to be disappointed, I had to give up after only two chaptersThe story is set in England near the area I live but the narrator had such a broad American accent that it really didn't work for me at all, I found it all very distracting. It's not the narrator's fault at all but it's little things like this that can really spoil a book for me Maybe I'll try listening again at a later date

Mr. Jenkins has become one of my favorite narrators of all time. 10/10. Will listen to anything he reads. Book was also very good. Took off a star because the female character was kinda lame.

I agree that the narrator started off a little rusty and gravely, but if you can get past his mmm mmm this and occasional mispronounced words (Lyon, forte) this is a sweet, easy listen.

I thoroughly enjoyed both the narration and the story. Very intriguing!

For a LibriVox book, this was pretty good. Narration was good, once again for a LibriVox recording. I wasn’t sorry that I listened to it.

The narrator was absolutely horrible. Wanted to rate zero.

Quite interesting, if a bit unbelievable, quite enjoyable, once you got into it

good book would of been better with a better narrator

The plot was interesting, if somewhat far-fetched. With one of the main characters and the narrator hailing from America, it was hard to feel the action was in England, especially with the mispronounced names and words. The narrators diction was at times just too strident and hard on the ear and almost gave up listening.

I found this audiobook very enjoyable. The plot was interesting, old fashioned, with a hint of love and suspense.

An intriguing story. The narrator might seem a bit 'over the top' his portrayals really suit the story. he does a brilliant job of delivering the humour. The ending is a bit of bow-tying in my opinion, but it's the getting there that is important.

The story starts out slow. However, gaining insight into post WWI speech and various mannerisms is fascinating

I thought the Narration was done very well, enjoyed the story very much not too long nor too short

Very interesting plot and book. I enjoyed it a lot. The narrator is a bit stilted and gets some inflection wrong, but is overall tolerable, particularly with the speed turned up a bit.

Really enjoyed this audio - light and easy to follow- with a good storyline

I listened to the first part of chapter one, I couldn't take any more.

I enjoyed the story very much but why do we have to be told before every episode the narraters name and stupid email address .

Profile Avatar

The first part dragged on but I wanted to know how it ended so I tolerated the unnecessary dialogue.

Good story. A bit long but interesting. I liked it.

I agree with the reviews by Ms. McDonald and Ms. Hume. I would like to add that the thoughts of unimaginable catastrophe mirrored the feelings l felt during the last year while living with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Horrible narration

It was a good story to listen to while driving. If you get a bit lost, due to being distracted, it is easy to catch up on what is happening in the story without having to rewind. It’s just an entertaining book without being too “deep”

I find, as with many books, that the repetitive introduction before each chapter, about the book and reader unnecessary, and would be much better without it.

I found it a very interesting book in many respects. One always has to remember that there were no modern technologies, cell phones and such when this story was happening. Don W Jenkins was OK but is nowhere in the same class as readers like Lorelei King or George Guidall. I enjoyed listening though and had several driveway moments waiting for a chapter to end.
