Summary
The #1 New York Times bestselling novel and basis for the Academy Award–winning film.

Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town.

This was the best book I have had in a VERY long time. The injustice broke my heart over and over. I laughed with it, cried with it, loved with it and hoped with it. This book truly touched me. It was an education. I am a teacher and I teach the Civil Rights Era in the South. The things that went on in that time hurt my heart. It’s always sickened me to have to stand in front of a group of kids and explain how these things happened and explain that yes, human beings did this to each other. Because of the way this book touched me, I taught with a passion I’ve never taught it with before. Though this book is fiction, it should be required reading for those teaching this material. The book personalizes the whole sordid time in our history. It makes that volatile time come alive to readers. Rarely do I say a book has the power to change people, but this one surely has that power. If you’re looking for a good book, this one is outstanding.

Excellent storytelling. The characters are brought to life vividly by the narrations. Harsh and uplifting.

The story is so good and the narrator brought each character to life as if you were watching it all play out before your eyes

I have waited for a long time to read this book. I was not disappointed at all. Jim Crow Mississippi from the point of view of the help. Civil rights marches are happening all around the country and yet the status quo stays on in Jackson Mississippi until a college graduate, with her own maid, sees how her friends are treating their help and she decides to do something about it. Grab your favorite spot, a favorite drink, get comfy and sink into this one if you haven't already. I'm probably going to listen to it a few more times.
