Summary
Violet: Nothing wrecks an already bad day faster than almost getting hit by a car. But then he rescued me. My mysterious, sexy savior wore danger as easily as he wore his black-on-black clothes. And still, I wasn't afraid of him.

I should've been.

Because after one misunderstanding, the man I thought would love me forever showed me just how ruthless and cold he really is. I trusted him with my heart once and it broke me. I can't afford to make that mistake again . . .

Hoka: She was my ikigai-my life purpose. Loving her was inevitable.

But I'm king of the Japanese mafia. Softness like hers doesn't exist in my world. Maybe that's why it was so easy for me to believe she betrayed me. Why I burned us to the ground.

Now that I know the truth, I'll do anything to get her back. I know a good man would let her go. But I'm not a good man . . .

Brian Nishii, I really enjoyed and did a great job, Summer did a good job took a bit to get used to for me. The story was good especially dealing with the different culture differences and acceptances.I loved Hoka even though he messed up thinking she had betrayed him and acted hastily, he tried to correct his mistake.

I was already a huge fan of this story (hello third act!) and loved the narration. Both leads gave more depth and feeling to a story that was already emotionally charged. I'll be adding this to my comfort listen pile!

This is Violet and Hoka's story, it's a story about two very different people who meet and feel instantly attracted to each other, two people who fall in love against all odds and appear to make it work. That said their journey to a future together is far from easy, it involves great pain and sacrifice, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Violet's in her early twenties, alone in the world, she left school when her single mother was diagnosed with cancer to look after her. She never knew her "sperm donor" he wanted her mother to terminate the pregnancy and Violet has never met him, although she knows who he is. Her mother died when she was only 16 but she managed to avoid child services and has worked hard to make something of herself. The book starts on the day she's completed a six-month apprenticeship and believes she's about to be offered a permanent position within the company. Only to find the position has been given to the niece of one of the managers despite the fact that she's totally unqualified to do the job. Having been escorted from the building by security she went to her boyfriend's home, only to discover him in bed with her friend. Could her day get any worse? Running from the apartment she runs straight into the path of a car, a car being driven by the most attractive man she'd ever met! Hoka Nishimura the head of the Yakuza, had no idea how much his life would change the day a beautiful woman stepped in front of his car. He’s a man that can be charming or as cold and ruthless as he needs to be, he's also quick to judge. He's self-confident but also quite solitary, he keeps almost everyone at a distance because of his position. So when he met Violet and she had no idea who he was but seemed to be just as drawn to him, the man and not his wealth or his position he wanted to pursue a relationship with her even though it would be frowned upon because she wasn't Japanese. But this didn't stop him and he and Violet fell in love. But just when everything seemed to be going well he did something that would tear them apart. Violet Murphy is a person who is so easy to like, she's caring and open but lacking in self-confidence, life has knocked her back so many times, so when she met Hoka she couldn't believe he would be interested in someone like her and for this reason, she doesn't disclose something even though he has let her know exactly who and what he is. This lack of confidence leads to a misunderstanding that almost destroys her. But her inner strength carried her through and she learned to value herself and in so doing became much stronger. Hoka and Violet face many obstacles, opposition from family members and a cultural divide. Will their love be strong enough to allow them to achieve their HEA? The narration of this book by Summer Roberts and Brian Nishii is excellent, both actors give such depth to all the characters but especially to Violet and Hoka.

Violet and Ashoka’s story was fabulous to listen to. The narrators brought life to the story and helped me envision the characters through the tone and inflection. Great job!
