The concoction wear off after several hours, but its effects are intoxicating and Dick cannot resist his newfound powers. Like Du Maurier’s protagonist, I would have gladly become a scientific “guinea pig” in order to travel back through time, although maybe under more controlled circumstances. This novel seems less mysterious or psychologically unnerving as some of her better known works, but her masterfully described step by step immersion into an addictive and dangerous inner journey is a wonderful cautionary tale with her familiar style of ending, leaving us startled, nervous and wishing for more.

The House on the Strand is my favorite book. It may have been written over 60 years ago, but it completely speaks to and indulges my wish to live in and experience long ago times. If you love history, this is a great treat and it takes you personally into medieval life.
