Reviews

I hate motivational books because I think they all tell you things you already know and add some cool terminology to it and pray on the weak. However Dale Carnegie's book is a true work of art. I made a lot of notes from it and have been obsessed with testing the techniques every chance I get. It has not made a huge chance in my life, at least yet, however I have noticed a chance of attitude within myself and people I interact with. enjoy the book!

Definitely an older book but the principles still ring true. The author points out that the tips in this book are not so much a scheme as they are foundations of approaching life differently than most. I recommend this book for anyone of any age.

While this is from the 80s, it is great points. I am already applying them. Well worth the listen!

Very easy to listen to. Andrew Macmillian ( Book Narrator) talks in just the right speed and tone of voice that doesn't make you feel bored. Some audiobooks feel like a slow, dragged out, modern college professor just rambling on because he is being paid to vibrate his voicebox. But you feel like this audiobook is being read to you because the narrator really wants to teach you something in this book to help your life improve. The points made in this book are so on point with how the human mind wants to be. Great info and a pleasure to listen to.

A timeless classic. Common sense that isnt always common. I read it years ago and actually have a print copy published in 1938 that belonged to my parents. I am happy that I got a chance to have it read to me this time!

It is a great insight into better understanding people and yourself. The title opens up alternative concepts to approaching people on issues in what I would call an respectful, non hostile manner.

This book kept me entertained the whole way through. Many times I had to pause and think about what was said and say “ah, I see how that would work!” Definitely a good read! Parents really should read this! I know it’s not typically a book for “parenting” but I just lost my daughter to suicide, and so many points in here were so heartbreaking to me! Had I read this just a couple months sooner, maybe I would still have my baby girl! That being said, parents need to read this! This book amazing!

What a wonderful collection of common sense wisdom about how to deal with friends, family, and work associates! Plus, the narrator is easy to understand, pleasant to listen to, and effectively uses a dramatic voice to set interchanges between people apart from the regular narrative of the book. This is such a valuable book that it’s worth listening to twice!

Profile Avatar
Thomas M.

The first hour is tuff, you have to tune in and I am really not much of a fan of the narrator. In my opinion his words “melt” to much together due to the lag of shifts in tone and pressure. BUT, this book is exactly what the title says. It is so well made that I am certain people in the 2500 century still will be able to learn something from it. Definetly worth a listen but reading it by yourself would probably benefit you a lot.

This was an excellent book on human relations, and one the best books I've listened to thus far! It is filled with good advice on dealing with people effectively and with many interesting and useful examples. Although it is an older book, the information is highly relevant to the 21st century. "Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise!" This was one of the recurring sentences proposed in dealing with people - a sensible approach when one considers basic human feelings, and an approach that will yield results. I highly recommend this read for anybody who desires to grow in dealing with people.

I Love this book!! It is a great compliment to the Holy Bible which is my primary personal guidebook for life. Dale's God-given wisdom is timeless & still applies to human relationships in our modern society. I especially liked the audio narration, it wasn't robotic at all & it was quite soothing.

Dale Carnegie in a nutshell: 1. Listen, don’t talk. 2. It’s about them, not you. 3. Meet people’s needs, don’t push an agenda. 4. Market to people’s needs, ditch the schpiel.

This book is really straight forward! I felt like my great grandfather was talking to me and giving me time less advice. Times have changed and I think people have moved away from this type of thinking. This is very old school business advice and it was refreshing to hear this kind of point of view.

It's been around 80 years since the first edition of this book was published, yet it rings as true now as it did back then. A timeless piece on applied psychology put in simple terms with great examples and even better set of essential rules which sum up the whole book. Moreover this particular audiobook is read with a memorable voice, which always matches the idea behind the words. I recommend it a thousand times, to the point where I've bought ten physical copies of the book and started giving it away to my friends.

Written so long ago, one would think Carnegie's book would be outdated. But, as a thirty-something, self-employed mother, I found the advice to be timeless and inspiring. I found the stories and references to history, politics and old-fashioned business to be informative and very relevant. It reminded me how good relations, good business, and good people are made outside of timelines and what works, works...no matter the year in which you are living.

Profile Avatar

I read this book years ago, early in my professional career. The audiobook was fantastic and a very convenient method for me to receive the information and messages again.

Profile Avatar

I'm really not sure why everyone is rating this book so highly. If you have had a fairly normal life and you were brought up by parents that weren't complete idiots, this book is not for you. Almost everything that Dale Carnegie says in this book is common sense. Treat people nice, smile, compliment, don't be mean. This is just a collection of short stories about how people were liked by others because they were not idiots and they were respectful. Someone claimed that this book is outdated and they are absolutely correct. There is absolutely nothing innovative or interesting that will drastically change your life.

Profile Avatar

This book is THE book to read (or listen to) for any self-help or self-motivation! It is like an owner's manual for how to deal with people of all types! This audiobook is easy to listen to because the narrator reads the book like a story. Not to mention how well written it is!

Excellent, essential classic. This book, though dated, is a time-tested book of truths in how we interact with each other and the common psychology surrounding human nature. Whether or not you can apply these principles in your everyday life, the insight into what motivates others is enlightening.

Everyone needs to read and listen to this book - preferrably in High School the first time - it deserves many rereads. If you want to be successful in anything read this book to learn - or relearn - how to interact with people.

Profile Avatar

I purchased this audio book. It is the type of book that you, I, everyone, should read and re-read. I wish it was required in school. It is not about manipulation. It is about recognizing that you are not the center of the universe, but everyone wants to be. If you make someone feel that they are the center of the universe, even it is just for a few moments, I promise, you too will win friends and influence people.

Profile Avatar
Nacheska Gentry-Combs

Wow, I wish I had read this years ago...as always the book makes it sound so simple to find success in business and in life by changing a few things but everything seemed "do-able". This book had lots of examples of how the techniques worked which helped it be creatively "visualized". I highly recommend it to anyone in business or management or marriage.

I want to be honest, if more people followed the 9 princlples in this book the world would be a better place. Dale Carnegie, emphasises how a smile and kindness can get you results. And you know something it works. I have been smiling and making ginuine compliments to people all over from the people at the drive through to people in stores, and it reflects and people are drawn to me and my family. I am associated with kindness, I bright up the room. I really am winning friends and driving people to see my point of view by giving them the attention and praise.

Timeless concepts given here. I thought, though that the concepts were a little basic and pretty intuitive. Just some basic logic really.

Profile Avatar
Bryan Parlee

This is a very basic book, theme is to be nice to everyone and than it drones on to make the point over and over and over again. You really only need to listen to the first 10 or 15 minutes.

Profile Avatar
Richard Zdanis

I've given this 5 stars because this is one of the foundation books (audiobooks too), that everyone should experience. It has many great foundation principles and should be listened to periodically for a "refresher." I will rent this again and again. Anyone who deals with people (and that's likely all of us), needs to keep this handy...(like a bible). (:))

Profile Avatar

It was was useful in knowing that I have almost the same methods of what the book says to do with others. It is helpful to quote to people and to refer those that don't know how to win friends or influence people or clarify certain points of behavior.

Profile Avatar
Debbie Moffitt

This is trully a classic. I had read the book years ago but there is great benefit from listening again. What a different world it would be if we all practiced the principles of this book.

Profile Avatar
Dale Sadler

Even though the book was written many years ago it is still extremely practical.

Profile Avatar
Thomas Payne

I was hoping for more. Seems to me the author’s premises could have been summed up on a page or two and read in 15 minutes. The stories gleaned to illustrate the points were pulled out of the early- to mid-1900s and seemed very outdated and not applicable to today. (If I heard one more letter written from a certain Mr. John Smith of the Greater Chicago Gas & Oil Co., I was going to shoot myself!) The narrator also spoke so s-l-o-w-l-y which made the barely interesting content even less so. Give me a PowerPoint presentation!

This was a very good book with some timeless lessons on interacting with people of the world.

From listening to this book I've found out that I have a lot of work to do. I'm usually the one that does all the talking, but now I am trying to teach myself to listen more. God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.

Profile Avatar

Listening to this book made me realize where so many "new" ideas today have come from. So much of what is in the book feels like common sense, but common sense isn't common practice. I'm not sure how my behavior will change as a result of listening to this book, but I enjoyed the experience. The book is read in a pleasant voice & it flows well-- easy to listen to.

Profile Avatar
William Correll

An overdose of much needed common sense and civility. I had heard of this book all my life but never read it - required listening for successfully dealing with people.

A timeless book that is chock full of good to know information. None of the information is ground breaking or completely alien in nature. It is all things we know, we just kind of forget or fail to practice in our daily lives. I've listened to it several times. The anecdotes are interesting to listen to and voice on the CD is quite soothing if nothing else pleases you at least hearing his baritone is worth the cost of shipping!

I listened to this tape and could not believe how much effect this book has had on modern writers like Steven Covey and others. Fundamentals of gentle and kind attitude and language do not change over time. This book tells how to manage people without getting angry or impatient. I highly recommend it.

Profile Avatar

This book hits the "nail on the head" over and over. It clearly states the obvious and the logical in a way that makes you pay attention to what you already know, but ignore. It sounds so simple and easy, but to actually implement these obvious concepts is much more difficult. This is why I think I will continue to reread it periodically to keep the priceless ideas and lessons in the forefront of my mind. If everyone rented this and truly attempted to utilize even one idea in it, we would all be a lot happier and productive.

Profile Avatar
Anonymous

Very easy to listen to - great stories to bring home the concepts. This is a very common approach and set of tools to help you bring people to your way of thinking and have them think it is thier idea. While you would think the material is somewhat dated - it still works.

Profile Avatar

This book reminds me of Think and Get Rich. Very old and boring.

“How much better this world would be if everyone implemented the ideas captured in this book” And how much more successful you will become by embracing these simple yet monumental ideas. This book is utterly brilliant and is a must read for those of us who interact with people. In my opinion this is the bible of how to communicate successfully with your fellow man.

I found the book to be very interesting. The author supplied story after story to hep illustrate the principles he was talking about. GREAT set!!!! Lot's of great reminders and NEW ideas. Have been interested in these materials for a long time, but the course cost and off-site location was just too prohibitive. Still, the language could be moderned, and examples could be closer to home. Not only did I learn new tools, but now I have the skills to give the program itself a stellar review to hopefully share the ideas with additional listeners. And, by the way, more than ever does it look like I'll be attending.

After studying NLP, hypnosis and many other sales methods and ways to change peoples minds, this is by far the easiest and most effective way to do it. Ironically, most people do NOT live by these rules most the time. But we LOVE those that do all the things suggested. I bought this CD program and have nearly memorized it and still there is much I forget to do. Rent it, it's advice is timeless and you'll be glad you did.

The first four discs can be summed in a four words: "Don't be a jerk." Listen intently, do unto others, look at things from their persepctive. My hopes were very high for this book (being it is often quoted) and so far the first four discs were somewhat dissapointing. It was interesting hearing him talk about some of the old Presidents.
