Summary
Based on a careful analysis of the earliest Christian documents and recent archaeological discoveries, The Jesus Dynasty offers a bold new interpretation of the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity. The story is surprising, controversial and exciting as only a long-lost history can be when it is at last recovered.

In The Jesus Dynasty, biblical scholar James Tabor brings us closer than ever to the historical Jesus. He sheds new light on Jesus' relationship with John the Baptizer, the role played by his brother James, and how Paul's ministry transformed Jesus' message, into what would become Christianity.

James Tabor has studied the earliest surviving documents of Christianity for more than thirty years. He reconstructs for us the movement that sought the spiritual, social, and political redemption of the Jews, a movement led by one family. The Jesus Dynasty offers an alternative version of Christian origins, one that takes us closer than ever to Jesus and his family and followers.

This audiobook will change our understanding of one of the most crucial moments in history.

I was fascinated by this book, so much so, I ended up wishing I'd listened to it again before shipping it back, so I purchased a copy for myself. I like information based on facts. I'm one of those people that can't believe something just because I'm told I'm suppose to. This book has so much research and factual info, it's a must read for anyone who has a problem believing what traditional religions have told us to believe. It makes sense out of things that haven't made sense before, much more so than many of the stories we've all been told by most religions.

I would have given this four stars if it hadn't been read by the author...very uninteresting reader. The subject matter is another story, though. Along with others seeking the historical Jesus, such as Bart Ehrman, the author comes up with loads of interesting ideas based on archeological findings and contemporary texts. HIghly recommended for those looking for information on Jesus and those around him that isn't based on literal interpretations of the New Testament and thousands of years worth of myths.

Other than the authors monotone speech patterns I found this book to very well organized and presented. The author is very open minded to new theories and yet a realist in regards to what makes practical since. I loved this book for its information and its search for truth.

I choose this audiobook as I am fascinated with the man Jesus and his life. Although a bit too drawn out in the first CD, I stuck with it and found I could not stop listening as the story developed. This is factual, salt of the earth information about this amazing man who walked the earth and changed us forever. If you love Jeses Christ and want to know him even better, you will not be dissapointed. Five stars!

I think many of us are intrigued by Jesus in the way that he has been presented to us and the many things about him that we still do not know. This curiosity has brought forth many recent books and the one by Tabor, a bibilical scholar from the University of North Carolina, is one of the best. Tabor presents many contridictions to the biblical Jesus that we have been brought up with, and because of that this book is sure to get plenty of criticism from reviewers with a vested interest. There are too many contridictions from what we learned in Sunday school to go into here, and he may or may not be correct on his proposals, but we will never know for sure, will we? I recommend this book because I think it provides the listener with a clearer portrait of who Jesus was than we had before... and is that not the whole point?

Wow! The truth is stranger than fiction. This has got to be most exciting history book ever. It reads like a New York Times best selling political thriller. Move over Dan Brown, James Tabor's book is a roller coaster ride through the life and times of historical Jesus, and the land of Israel under Roman occupation.

I found Dr. Tabor's book to be very interesting and most informative. He gave some interesting hypotheses for thought. He pointed out the descrepencies in the scriptures written by the different prophets. Made me gert out my Bible and check on what he was pointing out. It also made me want to get a detailed map of the region to find the places he was talking about. I enjoyed this book.

Dr. Tabor is presenting another aspect of the "Religion OF Jesus instead of the Religion ABOUT Jesus." Tabor continues the aspect that Jesus was a descendant of David and was continuing the Davidic Dynasty. He takes the historical stance as opposed to the theological stance. Others will probably criticize that Tabor doesn't substantiate some of his hypotheses. I read it in the sense that there were some unsubstantiated hypotheses, but are they plausible? Yes, in my estimation and according to my readings and beliefs, the theory that Jesus believed he was perpetuating the David Dynasty and believed the Kingdom of God was imminent is plausible. The definition of the Kingdom of God is where a lot of the Paulinian believers will take offense from this historical stance. However, one has to remember, this is a book written as a historical possibility, not as a theological possibility.

Very interesting. You learn a lot about inconsistences and historical details surrounding Jesus, his family and the origins of Christianity

An intersting set of facts, but I found it to be repetive.
