Summary
Saturday night dates at the skating rink have been a tradition in the small southern town of Heartsdale for as long as anyone can remember, but when a teenage quarrel explodes into a deadly shoot-out, Sara Linton -- the town's pediatrician and medical examiner -- finds herself entangled in a terrible tragedy.

What seemed at first to be a horrific individual catastrophe proves to have wider implications. The autopsy reveals evidence of long-term abuse, of ritualistic self-mutilation, but when Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver start to investigate, they are frustrated at every turn.

The children surrounding the victim close ranks. The families turn their backs. Then a young girl is abducted and it becomes clear that the first death is linked to an even more brutal crime, one far more shocking than anyone could have imagined. Meanwhile, detective Lena Adams, still recovering from her sister's death and her own brutal attack, finds herself drawn to a young man who might hold the answers. But unless Lena, Sara, and Jeffrey can uncover the deadly secrets the children hide, it's going to happen again.

I love Karen Slaughter books and have listened to many of them but this one will give me nightmares. It is horrific what some evil people can do to children and I hope they all rot in hell! As usual Kathleen Early broght the book to life.

This the second K. Slaughter book I’ve “read” and I’m hooked! The narrator is one of my favorites.

WARNING: This book is about a child porn ring, child molestation, pedophilia, incest between mothers and their minor children, and female genital mutilation that ended with a minor child with her vagina sewn shut. It was disturbing to read and not in a good way. If there was any indication this is what the story was about I would've certainly chose a different book. There is so much backstory about the characters that takes up half the book but that is completely irrelevant to the plot. There is no climax, the most exciting part of the story was in the first few chapters. There is no conclusion and feels like the book was missing the last few chapters. There's no wrap-up of the plot or the characters and it wasn't left undone in an intriguing suspenseful way; it just simply ended and I honestly thought the app had screwed up at first. This author wrote Pretty Girls and it was one of my favorite books ever. I was excited and had such high hopes for this book. The story left me confused and bored. All the child porn, child molestation, genital mutilation, seen vagina, and child incest left me wanting a shower every time I listened. I'm a big fan of the crime, murder, and suspense style books. If you are too I can assure you this is not the book for you. Oh, the narrator did a good job though! She was great!
