Summary
The writer of the following letters is a young woman who lost her husband in a railroad accident and went to Denver to seek support for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Jerrine. Turning her hand to the nearest work, she went out by the day as house-cleaner and laundress. Later, seeking to better herself, she accepted employment as a housekeeper for a well-to-do Scotch cattle-man, Mr. Stewart, who had taken up a quarter-section in Wyoming. The letters, written through several years to a former employer in Denver, tell the story of her new life in the new country. They are genuine letters, and are printed as written, except for occasional omissions and the alteration of some of the names. (Publishers' Note, May 1914)

I have dearly enjoyed listing to this and it has neen such a comfort. My grandmother was a homesteader and she was the smartest hard working honestly greatest woman I have been blessed to have taught me how to live. So many of the letters read in this series is just like sitting down to listen to my Grandmother or Great Grandmother"s. I am 55 but this brings the best of my life back to life. Not many women like myself or grandma are around to teach a new generation of women you can go it on your own. And as my Grandmother always said a woman needs only a few things in life to survive. 1.- A well stocked tool box. 2.- A bank account to save money in. 3.- Keep your wits about you. Never panic.

This book is just like receiving letters from a friend, c. 1910. Entertaining and inspiring with a nice sprinkling of surprises and humor as well as events that will touch your heart. An absolute delight!

Such a joy to listen to and I was totally transported to a Homesteader's way of life. My only regret is that it had to come to an end.

I’ve always been fascinated with this era of our history. What a positive attitude she had about life. Made me analyze my own life. I so enjoyed her adventures.

Very interesting story but also a successful homesteader. Would like to read a book that tells more of the struggles homesteaders faced

I enjoyed the book. It gave me insight into a world that is gone. It makes me think of how I would have handled life back then.

A terrific book. The narrator was so very talented that you would swear she was just talking to you about her own personal experiences. And the otiginal letter writer was so expressive and full of detail in her writing that this book was almost like a novel set in the days of homesteading. I was captivated. Linda

Brilliant glimpse into life of a pioneer woman!

Beautifully written, discriptions were so vivid it was easy to visualize. Her strength and her accomplishments, though she was modest, were inspiring.

Yes had to be true letters as every word was being ‘lived’ as it was so ‘elegantly’ read. not rushed but with a real soft beat as warm as a needed hug. Speakers tone of voice lingers with me from within and I’ll miss this feeling until I can read it all again.

Loved listening to this book! Her letters are a gift from the past. I miss her already! This is one you can read over and over. So funny, loving, tender, and great perspectives!

I loved this book. I recommend this book. Some of the language used was what they used back then, but grated my feelings when I heard those words used. I was born and raised in Utah, back in the 50’s. My father was a part-time prospector. We would live far up in the mountains, away from civilization, during hunting seasons and most of the summers. We had horses, carried water, cut wood for the fire place and the stove, used an out house, etc. it was nice listening to this audio book. Thank you for it

An inspiring story to listen to. It has made me able to imagine what it is like living 'Out West', in a way that watching a Western on TV does not. Its wonderful to hear a female voice from that time

Profile Avatar Dena Knight Jan 2023

I really loved this lady's letters. She painted a perfect picture of homesteading.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2022

Story was hard to follow, names and places not defined sufficiently. Story rambled on, back and forward and didn’t seem to match. Was wonderful how people then were so giving and didn’t have high need. They really didn’t know ant other life.

Great narrator and interesting read.

Profile Avatar James H. Aug 2022

A true wonder . This person was adapted well to her times. I dare say too much so. As she knows of no fault or addresses none of the histical labour cruel practices or gender issues. I would have liked to have known if and what she might have held as an issue. But Elinor's says more about the weather.

A most fascinating read. It was a joy to listen to the trials and tribulations as well as the happy times. What a hard life it was for them, as homesteadeers and a signal lesson in perseverance to us all !

An excellent history through letters of the early 1900’s American west. Be prepared for a couple of unacceptable phrases. So interesting. Most thought provoking.

Profile Avatar Jessica T. Oct 2020

what an amazing woman! worth the listen. All one way letters to a friend back home, but Elinore describes incidents, trials, humanity & humor like you're there, figuring this whole homesteading business out with her, one day at a time.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2020

It was a good listen. Very descriptive

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

This was a truly astonishing and fascinating book! The reader was excellent which contributed to my understanding of some of the unusual incidents mentioned. It is amazing to me that there were so, so many women during that time period who lived almost alone and who were able to do extraordinarily difficult work without anyone putting them down or telling them they couldn't do it! This woman was absolutely amazing - the book was fabulous. It's just sad that women like this are not already well-known in American history!

So sad when the letters ended. The narrator fit the mood, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Profile Avatar Diane M. May 2020

Excellent!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

A delightful and enchanting insight into this amazing woman homesteader's life at the turn of last century. Eleanor Stewart's letters are so beautifully written - and by a person who had no education. The listener will be enraptured from start to finish.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2020

I loved it. I would read it again. It was written in letter form which made it warm and personable. I was engaged from beginning to end

Profile Avatar Mary H. Nov 2018

Had a difficult time understanding the narrator. She does not enunciate properly. The book is good, but couldn’t continue listening. I regret purchasing the book. Because of the poor diction of the very young reader. I got tired of straining to understand what she was saying..a waste of money!
