Summary
Neil Gaiman meets Joe Hill in this astonishingly original, terrifying, and darkly funny contemporary fantasy.

Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. She's sure of it. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. She even remembers what clothes are for.

After all, she was a normal American herself, once.

That was a long time ago, of course-before that time she calls 'adoption day,' when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call father.

Father could do strange things. He could call light from darkness. Sometimes he raised the dead. And when he was disobeyed, the consequences were terrible.

In the years since Father took her in, Carolyn hasn't gotten out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient Pelapi customs. They've studied the books in his library and learned some of the secrets behind his equally ancient power.

Sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.

Now, Father is missing. And if God is truly dead, the only thing that matters is who will inherit his library-and with it, power over all creation.

As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her.

But Carolyn can win. She's sure of it. What she doesn't realize is that her victory may come at a n unacceptable price-because in becoming God, she's forgotten a great deal about being human.

This is one of those books that you start to listen to so that you can have background noise while you do other things. Then, about half way in, you really start to get intrigued by the story line. It’s slow building, but once everything comes together you end up wishing there was more.

What the heck did I just listen to? Very confusing and bizarre story until it started coming together. Way out there. Not my typical style but did have to listen to the whole thing to see how it ended. Narration was a little monotonous but it ended up suiting the lead

This was a great story and the narrator did a wonderful job with all the different characters. I knew exactly which characters were being read because of how she read them

Some characters more interesting then others, took me a second to realize what was even going on/the storyline but once I did it got better. I was really into it about halfway through then it sort of plateaued to the end. Interesting and different, but wish their was more to certain characters

What an unusual book!! Encompassing a reality much grander than most I pick up, I enjoyed being surprised (over and over) that the rules of our world could be broken. The overall story was intriguing, ending was satisfying, narrarator suited the main character well. I DID find it a bit brutal in some details, tempted to switch away at a few points. (If your mind replays brutality as intrusive thoughts later on, might be best to skip this one.) Overall would rate it as 7.5/10, definitely a book I'd recommend to a friend, with a quick preface!

It took a bit to get into the plot, but once it got good, I was hooked. The narration was great too! Great find

Very odd at times, but it did come together at the end. 1st thing I did was look for another by the author. Not yet.

If you have a tolerance for violence this book is very good. The narrator fits very well. I loved it.

I really enjoyed the story. I liked how the narrator gave each character a bit of a different voice.

This book kept me interested from the very start and all the way to the last word. I just loved how the author took normal reality outside of the box. An amazing read!

This was indeed a good read. I didn't expect all the twists, but some of them were obvious. I don't really know how to review this wthout giving away details.
