Great book that is high-interest to my 8th graders.
I loves this story and I adored the narrator!
Both the book and the narration is good. I enjoyed it.
Love the narration and the different voices of the characters. The story was engaging!
Very impressive story! The narrator has a pleasant voice and rythm.
Excellent story. Very well narrated! I’d listen to more!
I absolutely love the Tales of the Peculiar-books, but the Jesse Bernstein-narration in the first book is atrocious.
He's doing good when he's just reading as Jakes internal monologue and storytelling, his voice is good, and the pacing is also great, but the second he attempts a non-american accent, he falls off the cliff with a bang. The pacing goes completely off-kilter, the accents sound like a drunk american attempting a really bad accent, doesn't matter if he's trying a country-type working class accent, or if he's going for the more posh, upperclass accents, it's just BAD.
I wish they would redo the entire audiobookseries with Nathaniel Parker, or just ANY narrator who can do a believable american accent in addition to believable british accents..
This book was super interesting and intense! Quite a lot more violence then I expected, but it was good none the less.
The narrator was pretty good, but some of ways he did the voices and read the dialogue was kinda odd... still, he did a good job, and I enjoyed it throughly!
Good read for anyone 13 and up, a solid 7/10
Great book to listen to.
It was great
I really enjoyed this book. Good storyline and narration.
Wasn't at all like I expected it to be. Should have read reviews before downloading. It's not horror. You can see everything coming from a mile away but it's still introduced as if we were supposed to be surprised. I thought the narration was cheesy, but it fits the book.
I wanted to like this more than I did. I was not aware of how young the narration is geared, and YA just really isn't my scene. Parts of the book were very entertaining, and Riggs writes well, but the overall sequence of events to me felt a little shallow, predictable, and cliche. I'm not usually the person who can see ten steps forward into a book's plot, but I really felt that way in this one. I liked the narrator when he wasn't doing accents, but I wish that he'd left well enough alone if he didn't 'have' the appropriate regional accents, the Welsh, the 'thick Irish', et cetera. The overwrought attempt made it difficult for me to connect to the other characters in the book.
Currently listening to this audio book, so far its a good listen, good story however the only thing that bugging me if the narrator has done welsh accent as a cockney.
I had never heard of the book before the movie and I wanted to read it before seeing it. I'm not done yet but I can already say I'm gonna love it. I like books that don't take too long in jumping into action. The narration is spot on as well very pleasant voice.
A wonderfully engaging story. I can't wait to listen to the sequels. The narration was enjoyable also. The accents are well done and you can easily recognize the character being portrayed.
A very engaging story, but the narration is terrible, with a capital Horrible. It distracts from the story, and I was often left feeling nauseous from the see-sawing, screeching accents and misplaced vocal inflections.
If you can suffer through this reading, definitely check out the sequels. It's far more pleasant to listen to.
I cannot rate the book because I never finished it. The narrator's portrayal of female voices was so off that it was distracting and I could not take anything he said serious. I probably wouldn't mind listening to him voice a third party narrator but not when he has to go between different characters especially female. I will have to read the rest of the book.
Fantastic narration, very engaging. The story is amazing! Haven't seen the movie yet, but hopefully it is just as incredible. Will definitely be getting the sequels.
I love this book! It is one of the best books in the world!
Superb narration and interesting story. Now I can see the movie.
Enjoy the first of the series, can't wait to listen to the second one.
I enjoyed both - the story itself and the way of narrating very much! Although the story is probably more intended for children than adults, it is catchy and has a good flow. From my "not English native speaker" point of view I cannot complain about the narrator's accent at all and he definitely managed to keep my attention all the time. If you look for great listen and nice and imaginative story just go for it.
The story was fun and full of imagination. I will definitely read the subsequent books. I would recommend for most ages (contains curse words in a few parts). My enjoyment of the book was hampered by the narrator's poor accents and flat reading. Considering the majority of the characters had an accent, it would've been nice to have a narrator who conveyed them properly. His inflection was off too.
Very good, the narrator had a few hiccups, but it was otherwise a great listen. I do however think that the pictures are very important to the story, and would suggest a link to a pdf of the pictures be provided so it is possible to look at the photos when they are referenced.
The narration was the best I have ever listened to. He did dozens of character voices. I will be looking for another book he narrates for my next book. I really enjoyed this story as well, I would recommend it to any Harry Potter fans.
Great book! Narrator was fine until he tried to do the accents..... not pretty.
It was awesome you did amazing this is the best book in the world
I liked the story very much, but the narrator's awful English/Welsh accents drove me mad! When he spoke in his US voice he was fine, but the English and Welsh were really poor. To be fair, it didn't stop me from loving the story and enjoying it's unusual and imaginative storyline.
The narrator had the wrong inflection in his voice much of the time during conversation so it made an otherwise excellent book seem a little askew when it came to the relationships of the characters.
It started out slow I almost lost interest then it got better then very good then I was blown away. This book was crazy in a good way. I never expected to hear what I heard. I call this a must read. I will be getting the other two in the series as well. Wow.
Enjoyed listening to it on a long road trip! Have Hollow City next up!
Imagination! Great book - can't wait to listen to the next one!
Great book! Going to read the series..probably going to make into movie!!!
10/10 would recommend! So happy I found a new series to read!
This book was great! I started reading the paperback book and was unable to physically continue reading it do to work and taking care of small children. This app has enabled me to complete this book in record time and I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.
I read this book and then we listened to it on a recent road trip. The audio version was actually better than reading the story. The narrator for this is excellent. Thank you.
This was a enjoyable book. Well worth the commute. I was disappointed by the ending. I cant image how disappointed children would be to have such an ending.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration, I can understand peoples gripes about the accents but I loved them.
The book it's self is great but the narrators voice is quite bothersome. They way he's trying to do the different accents just doesn't work. Xx
Narrator distracted from the story...but it was a great story!
Very interesting and gripping story. It was enjoyable from beginning to end. The narrator's accent voice isn't great
Great thus far. Interesting from the start. I would recommend to all who like a fun story.
loved the story and this narrator bbrought it to life I can't wait to listen to the second book :(
Love love love great for a long car ride with kids.
I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. While the story is a good one, the narrator really makes me almost not want to finish it. He is fine when he's just speaking as the main character, but his inability to do character voices is glaring. I worked in the voiceover industry and animation for a while, so I do know where I am coming from on this - this guy cannot do accents!!! What's particularly maddening is that not only do all of his weird voices sound totally unbelievable as human beings, not a single one is doing a WELSH accent!!! My boyfriend is from Wales and I've been there - none of these terrible voices sound remotely Welsh!
The story is great - the narrator ... well, really, really annoying. It's hard to comprehend that anyone could do such bad accents. Think Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins times 100. This annoyed me so much it ruined some of the enjoyment of the book. If you can't do accents, then DON'T. I would have enjoyed the book more without them, as the narration itself was fine.
I might give this a 5 if I read it, but there was only one narrator and he was terrible at women's voices. The story and writing were sensational . You can't go wrong with this one.
I loved the book the first time I read it and even more after listening. Great story that holds you to the end.
Excellent narrating! Awesome job how one person changes his voice and remembers who each character is! You made this book so enjoyable!
Excellent story & excellent narration! Amazing how the narrator could change his voice between characters so easily and so well.
This book sucks you right in during the first chapter and each chapter after keeps you wanting more. It is such an interesting written book, from a very talented author. When you get to the end you wanting more and waiting for the sequel seems like it is forever away. The Narration brought this book life and did an excellent job. the book is a must read and is so different it was a nice change to what I am use to reading/listening too. I recommended giving it a try even if you don't read fantasy, because it was written so well that I cna't help but think that no matter what type of books you read you will appreciate this book for the talent it was written with. Happy Reading/Listening everyone!
Such an interesting and captivating fantasy book that reminds me of nothing else I have ever read! It grabs you right from the start, along with a little magic and unbelievable characters keeps you there. The ending was the only part I did not like as it should have kept going, I did not want it to end and can only hope a sequel is being written.
