Unabridged Audiobook
I was very disappointed with the book because I was looking forward to a story occurring during a period that I knew little about, was likely well-researched, and had good reviews. I enjoy stories that go back and forth in time and come from different perspectives. Sadly, by the middle of the book I was gritting my teeth at each cliche which came by the dozens, many of which were repeatedly used. I gave up counting “heart pounding” and started groaning when I heard it. I wasn’t sure I could listen to the entire story which was filled with one hackneyed phrase after another. Furthermore, the language of the narrators telling the story ( not the readers) was anachronistic and the descriptions of situations, conditions and history often pedantic. It’s a bad sign when you’re editing while listening and wondering where were the editors? The story concept was intriguing and well-researched but the writing needed a lot of help.
Very interesting story of Cuba in the late 1800's seeking their independence from Spain. Told by 3 women, the woman dubbed The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, a reporter, and a Cuban woman involved in the resistance.
