Summary
In the small village of Kilbane, County Cork, Ireland, Natalie's Bistro has always been warm and welcoming. Nowadays twenty-two-year-old Siobhan O'Sullivan runs the family bistro named for her mother, along with her five siblings, after the death of their parents in a car crash almost a year ago. It's been a rough year for the O'Sullivans, but it's about to get rougher. One morning, as they're opening the bistro, they discover a man seated at a table with a pair of hot pink barber scissors protruding from his chest. With the local garda suspecting the O'Sullivans, and their business in danger of being shunned. It's up to feisty redheaded Siobhán to solve the crime and save her beloved brood.

This was a fun, light read! I think that what I enjoyed the most about this book was not so much the murder mystery, but more the characters and the culture reflected through them. The author painted what felt like a realistic picture of life in the small village Kilbane through the unexpected cracks brought on by an unsettling murder. The particular local language and the lifelike characters and relationships are what makes this book really come to life. Somewhere towards the end of the book the mystery sort of consumes the characters, which is why this book gets only 3.5 stars from me, but otherwise I found it to be quite consistent and enjoyable. I also can't ignore the possibility that Caroline Lennon's wonderful narration of the audiobook made the story and characters come to life even better. She's a great storyteller and actor, and I thoroughly enjoyed her performance.

I loved this book. Couldn’t stop listening to it. A lovely little murder mystery. But the real charm came from the Irish narrator. It’s what made it. I don’t think reading it myself would have been that much fun. Especially as i probably wouldn’t have known how to pronounce half the stuff!

I mostly agree with Anat D in her review. I actually liked the ending as I felt it ramped up the search for the killer. Many of the language was new to me, but I enjoyed looking up terms to make sure I understood some of them, but that's what I enjoyed too...learning something new about a different culture/dialect.

The story was interesting tye narrator was excellent. I would recommend this book

I enjoyed the reading although sometimes I would forget who the characters were. After listening up to the end, I'm not quite sure about who done it. The characters were so lively. I love the dialect the reader used. One thing you can say, it was never predictable.

Delightful escape to the Irish countryside where small town life rang so true

Profile Avatar John R. Jan 2023

Fast moving storyline, kept my attention the entire time. Great cast of characters led by main protagonist busybody driven to find the truth, all very believable. Time well spent listening to this one, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Profile Avatar Wendy Dec 2022

The thought the narrator did an amazing job! But I found the story a bit strange. When the murderer was finally discovered, his reason didn't really make any sense to me.

Profile Avatar Pamela Brown Jan 2025

Very easy enjoyable store. I enjoy trying to figure out who the killer was. Narrator was great.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2024

The book that started it all. An excellent introduction to the main character, her siblings, and the residents of the village. It sets the foundation that the rest of the series builds upon.

This book has ~42 chapters and it takes ~30 before it gets interesting. Writing is good, twists are not shocking. Just okay.

Profile Avatar Marina P. Oct 2024

Love the series and love Caroline Lennon. She really makes the stories come alive

Profile Avatar Mary T. Jul 2024

Excellent story. Fast-paced. Narrator excellent at distiguishing male from female characters.

Really enjoy Irish novels and especially murder mysteries that have so many twists. Will certainly listen to more of these mysteries

Profile Avatar Valeriepascoe Feb 2024

Loved the whole series

Profile Avatar Neja S. Jan 2024

I really loved this book; I liked the accent of the narrator and the way she "voice portrays" the caracters. I loved the storyline and the comunity it describes. I also liked the twist at the end and I loved how sub-stories evolve ... and I appreciated the funny family moments and the remarks of the youngest family members. I recomend it a lot.

Very refreshing and crisp, not a heavy subject or story line but just plan fun.

Profile Avatar Anne D. Feb 2023

Oh, what a wonderful cozy mystery... Absolutely loved it! The narrator was awesome, the story line kept you guessing, the feelings and sentiments were spot on and sincere. 5-stars!

Profile Avatar Betty S. Feb 2023

The story was good and moved along at a good pace. Mystery itself was nicely handles. I also really enjoyed all of the Irish history thrown in. The narrator was good accents were good and voice differences helped follow dialog. What bothered me was all the excessive use of "character said" during all the dialog. The "said" problem might have come about because of the sheer amount of unsaid inner dialog from main character. The inner dialog makes it funny but doesn't work that well on audio.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2023

Flighty protagonist is a bit wearing. Fun story

Profile Avatar Peggy D. Jan 2023

Good mystery, great narrator

Profile Avatar David J. Jan 2023

This was a charming story about life in a small village. Not exactly a description you might expect from a murder mystery but it's true. I loved learning about the neighbors and shop owners and how everyone's lives were connected. The murder and investigation was certainly interesting, but it didn't feel like there was a chance for you to figure it out on your own. The final confrontation began tense, but didn't end very satisfying in my opinion. I love this book, not for the mystery, but because of the wonderful setting, engaging characters, and an absolutely perfect narrator.

Profile Avatar Smileykat Jan 2023

Very good story. A light and interesting who-dun-it where everyone is a suspect mixed with a bit of romance. You could envision some of this happening in a show. I absolutely loved the Irish accent and authentic way of speaking…that was half the fun! Great narrator.

Profile Avatar Bianca1976 Dec 2022

Loved the narrator and really enjoyed the story!

Excellent narration and a good story to boot.

Profile Avatar Ruthless621 Dec 2022

So charming and what a fun mystery made absolutely delightful by the narrator. I’m sorry for anyone who has read rather than listened to this book…the narrator made this such a joyful interlude and I’m excited to visit with her again on the next story in this series.

Profile Avatar Susan S. Dec 2022

Nice cozy mystery that was an easy read.

Profile Avatar Kristie F. Dec 2022

I absolutely loved the narrator. She had me laughing many times throughout the book.

Profile Avatar Julie C. Nov 2022

I will listen to anything with an Irish accent, and lucky me this book was delightful. a fun little mystery.

Profile Avatar Kenneth D. Nov 2022

This was a VIP book and I think the 3 stars for both the book and the narrator are appropriate. I think the author needs a good editor as there were many inconsistencies in the story.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2022

I liked the narrators accent. The story line kinda had some run in sections, and the the over use of the word “said” was a tad much

Profile Avatar Carol B. Nov 2022

The Irish narrator is excellent. The book was tedious, largely because the author kept returning to the main character’s thoughts in her head about who committed the murder. This wasn’t plot development; it was monotony. Based on this book, I wouldn’t read this author again.

Profile Avatar Julie D. Nov 2022

A good murder mystery but when the narrator had to state the names of the characters each time they had to say something(play) it became exhausting to listen to. The narrator was excellent A*

Profile Avatar Nick B. Nov 2022

Good Story listening to #2 now in the series..

Profile Avatar Shauna E. Oct 2022

A great, easy to listen to mystery. A bit of over use of the word 'said when each character spoke but I enjoyed the story.

Profile Avatar Katherine S. Sep 2022

I loved listening to this. I loved the togetherness of the family, the setting and accents, and just the overall story. It kept me great company.

Profile Avatar Deborah Z. Sep 2022

Good light read. Found myself laughing out loud at her antics. Narrator was excellent.

Enjoyable easy listen. I enjoyed the setting and the O’Sullivan 6.

Profile Avatar Karole H. Jul 2021

I enjoyed listening to this cozy mystery. The lilt of the narrator was captivating. Good story line.

Profile Avatar Jan W. Apr 2019

Enjoyable read. Author leaves just enough clues to solve the mystery if you pay attention. I’ll enjoy reading the next in her series.
