Summary
Do you want to listen to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave? If so then keep reading…
Former slave, impassioned abolitionist, brilliant writer, newspaper editor and eloquent orator whose speeches fired the abolitionist cause, Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) led an astounding life. Physical abuse, deprivation and tragedy plagued his early years, yet through sheer force of character he was able to overcome these obstacles to become a leading spokesman for his people. In this, the first and most frequently read of his three autobiographies, Douglass provides graphic descriptions of his childhood and horrifying experiences as a slave as well as a harrowing record of his dramatic escape to the North and eventual freedom. Published in 1845 to quell doubts about his origins — since few slaves of that period could write — the Narrative is admired today for its extraordinary passion, sensitive and vivid descriptions and storytelling power. It belongs in the library of anyone interested in African-American history and the life of one of the country's most courageous and influential champions of civil rights. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

I absolutely love this book! It should be required reading within elementary to high school grade levels. It should be mandatory reading within every Black American household.

Powerful for sharing a sense of perspective. The narration felt like an experience, it captivated me, had my mind engaging with the juxtaposition of his times and our own.

While I have known the name of Frederick Douglass from my youth, I had never previously read his autobiographical account. It is so much more powerful to listen to his story in his own words than to hear historical facts, usually told merely as the background to the Civil War, rather than as the powerful story of the most prominent example of a people longing to be free.

Douglas paints an incredible portrait of his life as a slave and his struggle for freedom. It highlights the dark history of the United States with incredible detail.

How much have we evolved as human species since way back when this took place? It is a very topical story as we still face times of deep injustice to too many fellow human beings. Listen to it! Read it!

Several times during this story I cried, my breath stopped and I had to repeat to make sure I heard it correctly. A piece of American history that everyone claiming to be educated folks need to reflect on.
