A Wall Street Journal Best Science Fiction Book of 2018

“Just try to put this gripping thriller down once you pick it up.” —AARP

“A shock on every other page.” —Wall Street Journal

How far would you go to find The One?

A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.

That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…

A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a fascinating novel that shows how even the simplest discoveries can have complicated consequences.

Fantastic, suspenseful, couldn’t put down read. The characters were all so colorful and had such strong voices that you couldn’t help but feel like you knew each one, and delighted in their “quirks” no matter how wrong or twisted or sweet- nothing cliché about them, they were all developed with such care, and although we follow five of them not one fell flat (well- my only “complaint” if you will was the ending of one character, I felt she could’ve changed more but at the same time she did…you’ll have to read to understand but I’m sure others will know who I am referring to. I wish this one’s ending was more satisfying- it was towards the ending but I felt something was missing in the way her story ended). Anyway, that’s me sort of reaching to find a complaint- I loved this story so much, the plot was genius and sooo thought provoking. It’s a great book club book, so many discussion points. My first five star book in a while- looking forward to reading more from this author. They used different narrators for the different characters- each chapter you hear from the POV of one of the five characters, and each narrator was just as brilliant as the next. I’ve listened to multiple POV stories without multiple narrators, and it adds so much to the story and the character’s “voices” (both literally and figuratively). It also helps to keep the different characters straight in your head- you know exactly whose chapter it is from the beginning of the chapter when you hear the narrator say the chapter number, and the character name (and even the way they say the name matches perfectly with the characters story and personality). I really can’t say which narrator was best, because they were all brilliant, and fit each character so perfectly. 5 stars all around.

Great twist (a bit predictable at times) - Phenomenal pacing - Loved all of the different narrators.

Definitely not my cup-of-tea. I found some parts interesting and the cast presentation and characters were good. The premise of the story was not of any interest to me.

I love this book! The chapters went by quickly and all the characters had their own unique personalities, some I like more than others. Great book!

I loved this “read” for so many reasons. Took me a few bits to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked. For the complex ideas, the story moved easily and quickly and I couldn’t “put it down.” Combines romance, sci-fi, and thriller into a total pop-culture hit. Really good!

Interesting plot with some good twists. I was not aware of the serial killer character ahead of listening to this. If I would have known I would have steered clear as there is some pretty graphic descriptions.

This is the second book by this author that I've read and it didn't disappoint! Plot twists abound and keep you guessing from start to finish. John Marrs consistently comes up with the most unusual concepts. If you're looking for something different, look no farther!
