Summary
If you open your house to strangers, who knows who might come in. And what they might be after. Or whom. Now, ponder the unthinkable and surrender to your darkest dread, as sinister storyteller extraordinaire John Saul weaves a heart-stopping tale of lurking terror and twisted intent.

Every parent’s nightmare becomes reality for Kara Marshall when her daughter, Lindsay, vanishes from her bedroom during the night. The police suspect that the girl is just another moody teenage runaway, angry over leaving behind her school and friends because her family is moving. But Lindsay’s recent eerie claim—that someone invaded her room when the house was opened to prospective buyers—drives Kara to fear the worst: a nameless, faceless stalker has walked the halls of her home in search of more than a place to live.

Patrick Shields recognizes Kara’s pain—and carries plenty of his own since he lost his wife and two children in a devastating house fire. But more than grief draws Patrick and Kara together. He, too, senses the hand of a malevolent stranger in this tragedy. And as more people go missing from houses up for sale, Patrick’s suspicion, like Kara’s, blooms into horrified certainty.

Someone is trolling this peaceful community—undetected and undeterred—harvesting victims for a purpose no sane mind can fathom. Someone Kara and Patrick, alone and desperate, are determined to unmask. Someone who is even now watching, plotting, keeping a demented diary of unspeakable deeds…and waiting until the time is ripe for another fateful visit.

I'm not familiar with John Saul's work, but I thought this book was just okay. Very unsatisfactory ending, as things weren't wrapped up. And the villain wasn't a surprise to me. I like Susie Breck, but Dick Hill is a real ham. I know he's won a lot of awards, but I think he overacts. From now on I will look for books that he doesn't narrate.

It was a good story, but the reading was a little odd. The female reader has a very wet sounding voice which makes it a little hard to listen to her. The male reader was good aside from the fact that it was more acting than reading. He was really creepy, which I know is the whole idea of it, but he just gave me the chills every time he read as the "bad guy".

For the most part, I enjoyed this book. It was exciting and suspenseful and held my interest beautifully. I kept thinking that I knew "who done it", but than my theory would be smashed! I loved it right up til the end, when it was finished with all the ends a little too neatly tied up and explained. The ending left me disappointed.

This was my first book from John Saul.It was a can't put it down audio book. I couldn't wait to get to the next cd. I like that it had a female and male narrators. It made the story more interesting and alive. I highly recommend.

This was a very creepy story. It started to remind me of your typical Dean Koontz novel, but then it went way beyond. There was way too much graphic description of the "deranged killer's" acts, mainly some very graphic torture descriptions. I found myself driving in the car and saying "Oh no!!" I guess some would call that a tribute to the author. Too much for me!!!!

Very, very creepy! This villian is so well-read that it gave me goosebumps! If you enjoy high drama and well-crafted, demented killers then you will be hooked right from the first few moments! Highly recommended!
