Summary
The #1 internationally bestselling author returns with an electrifying novel of devastating secrets and hidden lives that probes the fraught relationship between daughters and mothers and the lengths we go to protect those we love.

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all?

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows Laura has spent nearly her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle, Georgia; she knows Laura’s never wanted anything more than to lead a quiet, normal life in this conventional community; she knows Laura’s a kind and beloved speech pathologist who helps others; she knows Laura’s never kept a secret in her life. Andrea knows that Laura is everything she isn’t—confident, settled, sure of herself. Feeling listless, with no direction, Andrea, unlike Laura, struggles to find her way.

But Andrea’s certainty is upended when a visit to the mall is shattered by an act of horrifying violence that reveals a completely different side of Laura—a cool woman who calmly faces down a murderer. It turns out that before Andrea’s mother was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from the woman she once was, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

The assailant was a mentally troubled, teenaged scion of Georgia law enforcement royalty, and now the police want answers about what really happened in those terrifying moments at the mall. Though she’s being scrutinized at every level of the criminal justice system and her innocence is on the line, Laura refuses to speak to anyone, including her own daughter. She pushes Andrea away, insisting it’s time for her to stand alone and make a life for herself.

To save her mother, Andrea embarks on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. Andrea knows that if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for her mother … or her.

Filled with intriguing turns, surprising revelations, and a compelling cast of characters, Pieces of Her is Slaughter’s most electrifying, provocative, and suspenseful novel yet.

Great book and the narration was on point. This is one of the best books I've listened to in a year. Karen Slaughter is a wonderful author. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this story! The storyline kept you interested and the flashbacks flowed easily without confusing the reader. The narration was superb! I definitely recommend this book. Karin Slaughter always delivers a great story. I definitely prefer the book over the Netflix series. In the book you get an understanding of the main character and her daughter. I found myself empathizing and quietly championing the characters. You could relate with their struggles and triumphs. The movie series portrayed the mother as cold blooded and calculating, which was a real disappointment. I want to remember the characters as they are in the book.

The book was very good. Lots of suspense, twists and turns. The language however was a little too much. The story would have been just as good without all the foul language.

I'm a big Karin Slaughter fan. I love her writing style. That being said there was too much back and forth, and some of the characters were too weak and unlikeable. I couldn't wait for this one to be over.

I love Karin Slaughter as an author because she always write strong, intelligent characters. In that aspect, this book was a huge let down. Andrea was a muttering and dim witted LC, who did nothing but infuriate me the entire novel. Great story line, well written, but horribly weak characters

Great story. Goes back and forth in time, so it stays interesting. I read Girl Forgotten first, which is the follow up to this story. If you enjoy this book, definitely read the Girl Forgotten.

This one just didn’t do it for me. More than likely because I found the protagonist irritatingly juvenile and it unfortunately continued throughout the story.

Twists turns, energy and excitement. This was not my normal choice of a story but turned out to be one I’m glad I listened to.

The story just seemed to drag on and on. It was too long and the characters self-deprecation was monotonous.

Karin Slaughter never ceases to amaze me with her books. Kathleen Early has the voice that wants you to keep listening to. This book was not what I thought it was going to be about. It went a total different route that I was expecting.

Fantastic. All around. Narrator and writing was so perfect together, narrator even has a similar voice to Bella Heathcote, who plays Andy in the Netflix show! This book has so many events and details back to back, you’ll never get bored. I read the book prior to watching the show, and the book has information and juicy details that the show wasn’t able to portray, which is expected. The small petty, humorous, yet dark moments or quotes from Laura and Andy make this book one of my 3 favorites. The end had me crying and laughing. I recommend watching the show AFTER the book, it’s still very good, but just won’t hit as hard.

I had a love / hate relationship with this book. It was well-written with well developed characters. I think it could have been improved with some judicious editing- I listened to the unabridged audiobook and felt it was too long by at least 25%. One of the primary characters, Andrea, drove me crazy with her insecurities; I wanted to slap her and scream "Get a grip!" Good story, over the top introspection, a solid 4.

Lots of twists and turns. I found some of it a bit far fetched for my taste, but it was interesting. The narration was great.
