Unabridged Audiobook
It's a classic, brutally realistic, first person account of a brief period in the life of a civil war soldier that resonates throughout every generation of soldier. As a veteran, I can full appreciate the scope of Henry's range of emotions: anticipation, anxiety, fear, rage, and contentment. It's a book I can read, and, now, listen to many more times.
Great book but could have had a better narrator. I couldn't tell at times which character the narrator was acting as.
They don't write like this any more. Good book if you're interested in the personal views of a civil war soldier. Narration was alright.
I read this maybe 40 years ago and was caught up in the wonders and horrors again.
Since this book was published over 120 years ago I expected strange phrasing. The story is full of that. However some of it was incredibly insightful, some tough to understand. Just different words, but the overall message was clear. War is hell on earth, and the American Civil War no exception.
Good book, glimpses into the Civil War experience for soldiers. Lookin g for a war story, here.
Good story. Read this as a boy and stiil gripping.
I enjoyed the story and narration
Why do I keep trying to listen to books that were read in schools? Most choices were terrible then and still terrible.
Narrator frequently mispronounces words. For example, he says epitaph instead of epithet; bed-raggled instead of be-draggled; comprehension instead of condescension
I'm not the biggest fan of these kind of books, but the narrator gave it life.
Historical, loved listening
My husband and I listened to this on a road trip. The narrator did a good job, however; sometimes the story didn't hold our attention. It was more enjoyable reading it in Jr. High than listening to it as an adult.
Great book and narration
I read/listen to quite a few books with Civil War themes, and this was one that didn't resonate at all with me. It was monotonous compared most reads and the story line was bland. I've never quit an audio book after an hour, but I was really tempted on this one and wish I would have. The way the story was written wasn't entertaining, and it seemed like a writing assignment for an overuse of obscure adjectives was the reason to write this book. The narration was fine.
Well written and well narrated. It ends abruptly, but upon reflection, it doesn’t really leave you hanging. Enjoyable listen over all.
