Summary
The 'maddog' murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport--a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare--is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

I found this book very engaging. I listen to books on CD while I walk my dog and do my daily power walking. With some cd's I find my mind wandering, but not with Rules of Prey. It was a great listen.

I didn't like the reader and that probably biased my opinion of the entire story. However, the "game" in the story was not complex, intelligent, intriguing enough to keep a lot of interest. I didn't identify with or care about the characters.

This was my first by Sanford and a good one at that. I will look for another. There are a few subplots but nothing confusing nor out of place. I listened at 1.5x without a problem.

It started out slow but once you finished the first couple of chapters it improves. Loved listening to the old book. I can’t wait to listen to the series. Narrator was pretty good & funny at times too.

The narrator was great.

The book is amazingly predictive, cliche and sexist. Narration makes that last bit even worse.

Great storyline. Could've done without the excessive cussing.

I liked the story but too much foul language! I’m hesitant to continue listening to this series because of filthy language.

Not sure I like the protagonist. Is he the same in all the books? If so, this is my first and last. Narrator has many characters sounding the same - so the conversations run into each other and can be hard to follow.

This was my first novel by this author. I really enjoyed the story with its many twists. The main character is smart and seems like someone I’d enjoy knowing. The female characters were also interesting and distinct from one another. A very good suspense novel. The narrator did a good job but the timbre of his voice took me a while to get used to. Pronunciation of the words was excellent and timing of the dialogue was very good. Overall, this was well worth listening to.

I truly enjoyed this book and the character of Lucas Davenport .Characters are well rounded and believable. Not always predictable and therefore a great read. I look forward to exploring more of this author.

I'm a huge John Sandford fan and an even bigger Richard Ferrone fan! That said, this book does not disappoint although I think some of his later efforts reflect his growth as an author, Rules of Prey being the first in the Prey Series. If this is a listener's first Sandford / Lucas Davenport experience, I urge him (or her) to pick up the next one at earliest convenience!

The story was haunting from the very beginning, Unforgettable, icy, blood thriller, that introduced Lucas Davenport. Narration was excellent, made the hair stand up on my neck as he described the killer. The killer was was mad, but brilliant But Davenport was his match. Excellent!!!!

Well written thriller. Narration was good but would have been better with Minneapolis/Minnesota accent.

Really enjoyed this book. I downloaded the next in the series before I finished the first. The lead Lucas is a bit of a cad but you can’t help liking him. He doesn’t play by the book which I like. Great characters and storyline. Nicely narrated. The only thing I’d change in the narration is how slow the women talk, it makes them sound dumb when they are strong women.

Gives us a further glimpse into Davenport's progression when he was still a cop and before he had further moved up the food chain. More of an edge to the way he handles people - both informants and women in his life. Shows more of an ability to play cut-throat when the stakes are high. For those who enjoy this character, this book fills in a few cracks in his later development.

Great listen. It was written quite a while ago, before the common use of cell phones but if you can overlook the out of date technology, the story is great. Keeps moving and was totally enjoyable.

I have been a John Sanford fan for years and this is one of the best Lucas Davenport novels I have ever listened to. The fact that this book was written in 1989 and just recently recorded gives us a great view of Davenport in his earlier days. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
