Sorry but this book lacked so much for me. Narrator was terrible, almost stopped listening. Hard pass

Impossible to follow, confusing, no clear story-line or plot or characters. It’s like a bunch of random papers were just put together and read out about random events that aren’t even tied together. Easily one of the worst if not the worst books I’ve ever heard

I had hoped for so much more. It sounded great but I didn't see the struggle other than vanity of the main characters who were complaining about surviving the most horrific time in history on trivial, mundane things like food and crushes and actually having to work. Ughghgh. I'm sure the narrator is a nice person, but I felt she would be better in children's books.

Good story, but I wish it was structured a little differently. I felt like it was all over the place.

The plot moves at a glacial pace and nothing really happens… the book evokes zero emotion from the reader.

ugh... I thought I'd be reading about the Jewish problem in WW2, but got tired of reading about a mother and daughter cleaning and mending things. no action. very slowly developed plot. I quit about 60% theough.

Interesting plot going back and forth in periods of time, but the story lacked interest and the ending was so abrupt!

I loved this book. It gave an incredible insight into a terrible time but linked it to present day too. The characters were distinct and full of depth. Highly recommended

This is a wbile read/listen.As the story ends and you listen to the author's note, a sigh stands ready to be expressed. it is a sigh of mixed emotions that is filled with wistfulness, sadness and quiet joy after having listened to a story which you know has been repeated millions of times over the last 150 years of American history--emigrants who become American immigrants. The thousands of these immigrants who were Jews who had escaped from the Nazi had a unique experience both prior to and after their escape. The generations who followed these new Americans carried with them an emotional burden which affected their lives sometimes in unexpected ways. The book is written well, changing its tone from pre-war Germany to Milwaukee of the 1940's and the early 2000's. Several clever turns of a phrase catch your ear and bring a smile or a bit of sadness. I really enjoyed the narrator's talents at simulating German characters, children and modern day US ( and UK), and her expressive reading. .

I enjoyed the book, but was constantly confused because generations were constantly moving between time periods and locations. A family tree with names would have been helpful. Time was spent developing the oldest generation, after that it moved fast with little description.

Worst book ever. Narrator flat and emotionless. Story in cohesive. Unable to follow as new characters and places were not explained. We gave up. It was a waste of my VIP pick.

Too slow to keep my interest

As with most reviews. I "struggled" to stay engaged. Was all over the place, not a flow.

The narration was beautiful and the characters definitely reminded me of the German immigrants I'd met from this time period.

Very sad story
