“An undisputed master of suspense and terror.” —The Washington Post

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

My absolute favorite book ever! This was my first time hearing/reading the novel... And it's sooooo much better than the movie, and that USED to be my favorite movie! But now, I don't think i can ever watch the movie again without being utterly disappointed. They could have done so much more with the movie. What a let down! I highly recommend this book! It's amazing!

Only 6 hours into the book and am amazed at all the info missing from the movie. The book is amazing. I can't to get to the end! I'm not a fan of the narrator's voices but his annunciation is great. Some times the way he starts sentences is JOLTING. Especially when he goes from Wendy's soft voice to pretty much anything else. But I still like be listening to.

I love Campbell Scott as the narrator for this creepy yet wonderful tale. He is exactly what I look for in a narrator. I'm just getting into King's work and this novel was amazing. it kept me going on my long commute every day.

This book is fantastic. I first saw the movie in the miniseries before deciding to read the book. As the saying goes the book is way better than movies. The narrator did a pretty good job doing the different voices. I didn't like him at the beginning but I got used to him.

This is my first, front to back, Stephen King novel! Being a big fan of the film I was naturally drawn to this particular book for these reasons. While I found Stephen King to be an incredibly detailed and cinematic writer, I couldn’t help but feel inundated by the detail he includes in his books. I often times found myself zoning out when it began to describe mundane details that are tangentially related to the plot. You could make the case that these details flesh out the world of The Shining and I would agree but I just found that it ultimately made the experience not as engaging as it could have been. Still a great story with fully realized characters and a fantastic setting. I just wish it struck me the same way the film had.

Amazing…a story that’s ageless and can get retold again and again. Grabs me every time and I am so invested in the characters and what happens to them. Love this story!

Don’t like the narrator

The story is great. Mr. King should do this for a living. My only complaint is that my particular version was recorded so low that I have to turn up the volume very high. So what you say? Yeah, this doesn't sound like much, but I listen to my audiobooks while walking my dog. I have a pedometer application that tells me how long and how far I've been walking. I walk my dog a lot, probably 8 to 10 miles a day. Because the book was recorded so low, when my pedometer application comes on, it's as loud as a rock concert. OK, maybe not that loud, but it's really loud. I wonder if anyone else has this problem with this recording. Enough complaining. The narrator was good, not great, but good. Sometimes, he comes off as monotone. His interpretation of the characters is distinct enough to know when he speaking for Jack or Wendy, but it's close enough to get lost because the difference isn't big enough, if that makes sense.

Absolutely loved this book! I heard the movie isnt as good as the book but I saw the movie for the first time after reading this. I think it gave the movie more depth and so I loved both.

Terrifying and captivating read! Can’t ever go wrong with a Stephen King book. Narrator has a great voice and does an amazing job however it is very quiet, which I do not blame the narrator at all! Highly recommend, if you’re even considering, just get it!

Wow, how the book blows the movies away. King can make you feel the emotions of the characters just with his words. This is the first book to ever make tears come out. He described Jacks addictions and anger issues to a T. Only someone who has experienced can describe so clearly, genius

Of course, I've seen the movie and I always feel the book is so much better. And it was. I've always been a big Stephen King fan. So it just goes to say, if you like Stephen King, you're going to enjoy this classic.

I thought it was one of his best books. But again it didn't translate well to a movie. I love the books ending much better than the movies!

This was as good as you’d hope it to be. True enough to the movie to give you the nostalgic feelings while reading, but different enough from the film that it’s a new story that keeps you engaged. The narrator is amazing with his inflection. Highly recommend

My first King book, read so many years ago. Been wanting to revisit it and Audiobooks gave me that chance. The movie was not Mr Kubrick’s best effort as he was unable to duplicate King’s mastery of insightful suspense. Narration is very good; it can’t be easy to vocally interpret that level of intensity. Nicely done. Close your eyes, put your head back and take a vivid trip to Colorado.

One of the better S.K books, nice flow, not bloated, he doesn’t get distracted as he did in the book IT. Nice read

Love the story, Love Stephen King. The narrator is a terrific actor, but such a soft reader that I had to crank up the volume on whatever listening device I was using, and no matter what kind of device, I had the damn thing all the way up. But overall, it’s amazing!

the book itself is amazing, undeniably a King masterpiece. My biggest complaint was the narration, which did ocasionally provide very good and interesting voices but was mostly dry and uninteresting to listen to. It took me a great deal of time to finish this book because the Narrator was simply so boring to listen to through most of the novel...

It dragged a little at the beginning but that is his way to develop the story. It was much more scary than the movie.

The greatest book ever. The narrator made it all come to life. I have never had any interest in horror like this until now. I’m now beginning the book “Doctor Sleep” which is a continuation of this book. Just started and already hooked. I strongly recommend it. We are following aftermath of Danny, his mother and Dick.

One of my favorite books, the shining has a very unsettling plot that keeps the reader engaged. The book has details like Danny’s ability to shine, the hotel’s takeover of Jack, and the hedge animals that you just can’t get in the same capacity from the movie.

A great read and read well by the narrator. I would definitely recommend. I wasn't very familiar with how the book differed from the movie but it was pleasantly refreshing. I can understand why King was not a fan of the film as the book explores more than just the scares that impact the Torrence family. The biggest standout being the development of Mrs. Torrence as she is far from the pathetic, helpless mother portrayed in the film. Overall, I found the book entertaining, captivating, and a better story than the movie though it may not be as scary.

I’ve been a King fan since the early 90s and The Shining is the first of his work that I read. It’s still my favorite. The original film that they made back in the 70s doesn’t even come close to doing this book justice. The miniseries they did later came closer, but still not better than the book. Also, this narrator did an excellent job.

This book was absolutely phenomenal. It was my first introduction to Stephen King’s work and it one of his strongest novels for a reason. The characters are compelling, the hotel is terrifying and the way everything unravels in the end is absolutely tragic. I can’t speak highly enough about it. You will just have to listen to it. Great for a weekend read.

Enjoyed the book but had some trouble with the narrator. I didn't care for his voices. Sometimes it was difficult to decipher which character he was referring to. Book was excellent though.

The best horror book ever written. The characters are in isolation in a hotel which becomes another character itself the transformation of the father and submission of the mother and son makes a cocktail waiting to explode. Can't take it down.

first of all, this would be my first stephen king novel. not quite what I was expecting, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big horror fan, but nothing really seems to do a whole lot for me. this didn't do too bad trying to be honest. second, the narrator. he did an amazing job with separating characters, and every time he whisper screamed I couldn't help laugh a bit. overall it was a great choice on my part!

A good book. Especially worthy of your time if you follow it with Doctor Sleep. This book is a bit long, but never minded it as an audiobook. While The Shining isn't quite a 4 star in my estimation, Doctor Sleep is a 4 . Not the World changing level of The Green Mile, but excellent anyway. Mr. King is still the master of bringing characters to life. Again, even more so in Doctor Sleep than in The Shining (which was more of a straight up, build the tension, horror story).
