Summary
The New York Times bestselling author of A Long Time Gone now explores a Southern family's buried history, which will change the life of the woman who unearths it, secret by shattering secret. It has been two years since the death of Merritt Heyward's husband, Cal, when she receives unexpected news-Cal's family home in Beaufort, South Carolina, bequeathed by Cal's reclusive grandmother, now belongs to Merritt. Charting the course of an uncertain life-and feeling guilt from her husband's tragic death-Merritt travels from her home in Maine to Beaufort, where the secrets of Cal's unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff. This unknown legacy, now Merritt's, will change and define her as she navigates her new life-a new life complicated by the arrival of her too young stepmother and ten-year-old half-brother. Soon, in this house of strangers, Merritt is forced into unraveling the Heyward family past as she faces her own fears and finds the healing she needs in the salt air of the Low Country.

I liked this story. I found it fairly predictable. The big secret was good. But much of it reminded me of a romance novel which is not my favorite genre. It is a nice story. And if you are a fan of romance novels, it would be a good book for you. It has one of those neatly tied up endings. I was really ready for it to end long before it did.

It was a lovely story narrated with care. Previous readers had commented that it had humor I found none but the storyline as it unfolded made this lack undisappointing. The end was predictable but I was happy it did

This book surprised me, I thought it was going to be a typical light summer romance with a little bit of a mystery thrown in. Oh boy was I ever wrong, but in the absolute, can't stop listening, ignoring everything around me, except things that I can do while listening to this book, kind of surprise. The twists and turns the author takes you on are done so masterfully you feel like you have just ridden the best roller coaster ever and you want to ride it all over again when it is done. The surprises keep coming all the way to the end, just when you think you have it all figured out, here comes another twist. There are multiple plot lines in this book, so be prepared for that, I thought that might ruin it. Karen White handles it with skills I haven't seen since James Patterson. It all works, it isn't jumbled or disconnected, every plot is joinedin one way or another and as it comes around when you think they have finally figured it out, or you have figured out, Ms. White goes and changes all again. The author and narrator effortlessly change between characters, keeping the storytelling interesting. Ms. Plummer does an excellent job with one character in particular, that in my head I saw Jamie Pressly as Jill Kendall from the TV Show "Mom," every time she goes into this character, that is all I see, and by the way, that is an absolute compliment. They both seem to be effortless at painting a picture of when and where they are taking you, one with her pen, the other with her voice. If you made it this far, you'll love the book. I find it so hard to make short reviews without giving anything away!

Life doesn’t get easier we just get stronger. A quote from this book. If you like the movie Beaches you will love this book. I feel in love with the characters in this book. I have to see if the author writes all her books like they are friends. Things in life happen for a reason. Another quote from the book.

Great book with many layers. I don’t see this as a romance book. It definitely shows consequences for actions and choices. The mystery unwinds a bit slowly. But it’s an intriguing one. Shedding light on what the book does is truly important. Loved the narrator.

I could handle listening to a book like this once in a great while because the old fashioned southern way of speaking and southern belle attitude of one of the main characters (I’m a “northern girl “). That being said it seemed to be very authentic and correct for that character and somewhat charming and definitely added to the story. Overall the plot/mystery was very interesting and well told. Some of the aspects of the relationships was predictable but not off putting. I highly recommend this book and especially recommend it as an audiobook- the narrator did an excellent job and much would be lost just reading the book.

Lots of layers in this story, with characters you come to really care about as their lives are revealed. The thing I appreciated the most was how Susan (Lauralee) (sp?) and Thérèse (Merritt) each had not only their own character’s chapters, but also had to speak as each other’s characters. They did it seamlessly. I imagine they worked together to make the other’s character sound as much like the original narrator as they could. Wonderful storytelling brought to life by these two. Special shout-out to Thérèse for her amazing work in the last few chapters (without giving anything away). Wonderfully done!

Loved the story even though a bit predictable. Didn’t like the narrator of the main character or the brother in law too much. Narrator for Lorelei was great until the end. Instead of making her sound sick, she sounded 90 years old. Tough thing to do probably so I’ll give her a break!
