Summary
The novel details the lives of three characters, first as children and then as adults - Waldo, Em and Lyndall - who live on a farm in the Karoo region of South Africa. The story is set in the middle- to late Nineteenth century - the First Boer War is alluded to, but not mentioned by name. The book is semi-autobiographical: in particular, the two principal protagonists (Waldo and Lyndall) display strong similarities to Schreiner's life and philosophy. The book was first published in 1883 in London, under the pseudonym Ralph Iron. It quickly became a best-seller, despite causing some controversy over its frank portrayal of freethought, feminism, premarital sex and pregnancy out of wedlock and transvestitism. a moving story, not of an African Farm but of certain people's lives branching from the farm. the narrator used a shrill voice that hurt my ears at times but it was only for a few characters. besides that they did wonderful.

Interesting setting and points of view considering the period in which it is set - a little long-winded for my taste though. Suitable narration with acceptable level of characterisation throughout.

Good South African narrator. Some interesting views on life are projected by the characters of Lyndall and Waldo in the story - views way ahead of the Victorian time of writing. Quite a strange book but worth the read

Narration is excellent and so in tune with this novel. It is a pleasure to listen to.. The book is a classic and a must read for anyone interested in early feminism, imperialism and South African history.
