Summary
Handsome young Tryon Dunham has just returned home on the train from a business trip one evening when he's accosted by a beautiful young woman at the station. She's terrified that she's being followed and asks Dunham if she may walk with him away from the station. Her manner and appearance are those of a well-dressed and well-bred lady. However, she refuses to tell Tryon her real name or why she is running away. He feels a responsibility for her and arranges for her to accompany him to a dinner party where she delights everyone there with her exceptional musical talent at the piano. Tryon then assists her in leaving the city on a later train that same night. Captivated by her beauty and talent, he is determined to solve the mystery of her identity. What frightened her so badly that she would leave wearing only the clothes on her back and no money? Is she an adventuress or thief masquerading as a lady in distress? A beautiful lunatic who has escaped an asylum? An heiress who has been declared missing? Tryon will not stop searching until he knows the answer. (Introduction by Lee Ann Howlett.)

A brilliant “read”. Beautifully narrated. I found the story really good, interesting. I struggled a bit with the old fashioned attitudes to women but I enjoyed it . The narrator was excellent.

Ran Mattison... A fun little mystery. With good narration. Not the kind that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but still interesting.

I haven’t read a book by Grace Livingston Hill since I was a teen. My mother’s friend had a complete collection which she kindly loaned to me book by book. So it was lovely to ‘read ‘ one of her books again. The mystery of who this girl in distress really was, and the story of the kindness of the gentleman and the desire to see she was cared for kept the interest all the way to the end. Knowing the type of story the author wrote, the ending did not disappoint. And I am off to listen to other books by Grace Livingston Hill. In some ways someone might scoff at the possibility of something like this happening. But, I assure you that there was at least one such kind young man who, though the circumstances were slightly different in that we knew names and wrote as acquaintances for 6 years from one country to another, was willing to marry and care for me. And over 30 years later, he still cares for me in the sick years as he does in the well years.

Average, good enough to keep you listening to the end but a very mundane story. Narrator was good i thought

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2019

Disappointing end to a somewhat boring story. Narrator was fairly monotoned the entire time, which didn’t help make the story any better, but wasn’t the worst narrating I’ve ever heard.

Not really much of a mystery here. Pretty boring events.

It was a strange book. I had to make myself listen to the first chapter or two and then it got interesting later. The speech and tones were difficult to listen to. All and all it was a good story.

Worthwhile book. I thought it was going to be more of a mystery/thriller and it was more romance. I enjoyed it, though. Narration was a bit drab for my tastes, but she was far from terrible. It's a short book and I'd recommend it for a decent car ride if you don't want to start something and not finish it.
