Summary
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“A superb suspense writer…Brava, Ruth Ware. I daresay even Henry James would be impressed.” —Maureen Corrigan, author of So We Read On

“This appropriately twisty Turn of the Screw update finds the Woman in Cabin 10 author in her most menacing mode, unfurling a shocking saga of murder and deception.” —Entertainment Weekly

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lying Game and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes this thrilling novel that explores the dark side of technology.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the home’s cameras, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder—but somebody is.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, The Turn of the Key is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

I liked the book and love the narrator but I was left wanting more of this story. It ended like there could be a 2nd book to continue. Hope so.

I finished listening to the audio book in just two days, I couldn't turn it off. If I hadn't needed to do life stuff, I would have finished it in one day. First, the narrator for this book is perfect! Her voice couldn't have been more suitable to read this story. She brought the characters to life and made listening to the book an incredible experience! I could see the story play out in my mind, As for the author, I am impressed with her writing skills and ability to weave a story. I was pulled in from the start and surprised at each twist and turn, the ending ... wow. I did not see that coming! The characters were written in a way that made them "real", the story was perfectly written, engaging, and entertaining. Definitely in my top 3 favorite books of the year!

I really loved it but I could use a little less profanity. I did not think it gave anything extra that could be done without it. The narrator was excellent. I agree with Monica R below completely. Ron M

Interesting story but confusing. There was no conclusion. The story just stopped. It’s as though they’re waiting for another chapter to be written or a sequel. A very disappointing ending!

I love Imogen Church and Ruth ware. I enjoyed listening to this book but I wasn't happy with the ending.. It was still really good and worth a listen.

Profile Avatar Nancy K. Jul 2021

The narrator was fantastic! I found the story to be slow and a bit boring, but it was a fun listen. However, I felt that there were parts that just dragged on & didn't go anywhere. The ending was the best part of the book, a fun twist that I didn't see coming. But I thought the book took too long to get there.

Profile Avatar Yvonne J. Nov 2019

Amazing story and narration. Narrator does a particularly good job with the children's voices

Profile Avatar Bryan C. Nov 2019

The conclusion of the book was totally unsatisfying. Also the excessive use of profanity, especially the constant use of “f—-“ was a poor substitute for good writing. I found it objectionable. The mysteries in the story kept me continuing until the end, But when I finished it, I wished I had never started.

Profile Avatar Marchell I. Nov 2019
