Unabridged Audiobook
A very thorough, wide ranging history of the Vikings. Full of place names and people and mythologies. It helps to have the hard copy to see the maps and see the spellings of the names and location. The reader is amazingly wonderful with his reading of old Norsk, old English and all the old place names. There are some really amusing stories and details, and the author has a quiet sense of humor that appears occasionally like a sparkly gem in the hoards of names, dates and places. I've enjoyed it very much.
Great book. Good history.
An entertaining and well researched history of the massive impact that Nordic people and culture had on Western Europe and beyond.
Robert Furguson's The Vikings is a remarkable work of scholarship. It's heavy on details -- dates, battles, locations, individual people, religious beliefs, etc. -- but Furguson tells the story in a way that makes it come alive. The narrator is excellent, too. I ended up buying a paper copy of the book so that I could highlight interesting parts for future reference. I've been teaching students about the Vikings for years and have a read a couple good books about them, but this book easily doubled my knowledge on the subject. Highly recommended!
