A “superior thriller” (Oakland Press) about a man, a dog, and a terrifying threat that could only have come from the imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz—nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

On his thirty-sixth birthday, Travis Cornell hikes into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. But his path is soon blocked by a bedraggled Golden Retriever who will let him go no further into the dark woods.

That morning, Travis had been desperate to find some happiness in his lonely, seemingly cursed life. What he finds is a dog of alarming intelligence that soon leads him into a relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation...

Being my first Dean Koontz book I wasn’t sure what I was in for. Pleasantly surprised. The book was an easy listen and similar to many Authors the best was saved till last. I will stress it was an easy listen with very little rambling scenarios needed to fall into place as book progressed. A simple but hang on to your seat narrative. Einstein, a dog you fall in love with. But none the less a story with a great adventure.

The narrator didn't create distinguished character identities, because of this it was unremarkable listening.

This book is a bumpy ride. Action, intrigue and tiny bit of romance. Nothing like the movie. As the main character in this is an adult man and movie a pre teen. I enjoyed the story and the read.

How can you not enjoy a story that has a golden retriever in it? This was my first Koontz book I ever read and still a favourite. The narrator did a great job and kept me wanting to hear more.

I throughly enjoyed the book! I had seen the movie Watchers 1988

I like the book very much. I did not enjoy the narrator. His attempt at using a variety of voices and accents fell way short and did a disservice to the book, including mispronounced words.

Honestly, this was my first Dean Koontz because I am not normally into the "horror" genre. But waht a very pleasant surprise. I agree with the vet - coming across this dog is indeed like finally discovering Santa Cluas is real!

Found this book hard to put down once I started listening and the narrator put the story over extremely well

1st Koontz book and I enjoyed it after trying to find other authors in the style of Stephen King.

i really enjoyed this story, although book was written in 1987. There are surprisingly few dated items mentioned, such as the Soviet Union and use of pay phones, none of which affect quality of the story. I recommend this book as it kept my attention and interest throughout. The narrator was excellent.

A solid book by a great writer. I just read a book he wrote 30 years later and he has gotten better and lazier. Either way, a lot of fun.

I found this book interesting and a bit different from the usual thriller/horror genre. It started off well but then I found it a bit slow going until about halfway through when it picked up the pace again. It was an ok read but the ending was predictable I thought.

Dean Koontz is like Stephen King except, Koontz writes as if you can actually picture it really happening!! I grew up on Orange County Ca and most early books were written about the area making it riveting! A GREAT author!

Way too violent for my taste. The graphic descriptions of brutality and torture were so alarming to me that I couldn't get past the first few chapters. The narration was fine, but unlike other narrators this particular narrator didn't attempt to modulate his voice to assume the personality of each character.

Took about an hour to really get into the book just frofrom a personal preference perspective. However it was really an engaging read through the rest of the book. Wasn't entirely in love with the narrator it almost sounded like it was on 1.25 speed, but it wasn't.

I loved the book. At first I found the narrator a little bit irritating because I not a native English speaker and he is speaking rather fast at times, but then I started to enjoy it. It is really great how he changes the reading rhythm as the action is more alert... The story itself is very good too...

Wonderful book. I was so emotionally invested in that darn dog that I can't help but gravitate towards Golden Retrievers now.
