Summary:

From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore comes this rich and revelatory memoir about writing and running and the integral impact both have made on his life. Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers Murakami’s four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon. Settings range from Tokyo, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston, among young women who outpace him. Through this marvelous lens of sport emerges a cornucopia of memories and insights: the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer, his triumphs and disappointments, his passion for vintage LPs, and the experience, after age fifty, of having seen his race times improve and then fall back.

I love Murakami Harumi’s books, this is the first of his I have enjoyed in English and I believe the translator captures his writing style pretty well. The narrator for this book also did very well. He does very well to write about his passion for running and what running for his was throughout significant periods of his life. As a fan is his previous work, it is interesting to read his thoughts on the completion of his books.

Years ago i read this book in a time when running and blues meant nothing to me, yet i couldnt help myself but wonder the places the mind goes when you run. Years later I would run marathons with his words resonating in the back of my mind

This was my second audio book. I’m training for the 2019 Boston Marathon. I’ve always used music to train with. Audio books are very new to me and took some getting used to. This book was a dream. Captivating, charming, witty, and smart. I should have begun my audio journey with this title. Thank you Mr. Murakami.

As much about writing and creativity as it is about running. Great book with excellent narration.
