Summary
'Julia Whelan reads the novel in her low, pleasant voice, moving down a register to capture Richard's infuriating condescension and lightening slightly for the younger Emma. With its perfidious turns, this escapist entertainment is a fine example of the 21st century's more cynical version of the O. Henry ending.' — The Washington Post

From Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen comes the next hit audiobook thriller, an instant New York Times bestseller!

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.

Listen for the truth between the lies.

Praise for The Wife Between Us:

'Addictive domestic thrillers with twist-filled plots and unreliable narrators are increasingly popular. Add in assumptions that should not be assumed, shape-shifting, surprising characters and a complex chronology, and you have a hint of what you'll find in The Wife Between Us...All will be made clear, or perhaps not, as you listen to Julia Whelan's tautly paced performance.' — BookPage

“A clever thriller with masterful twists.” – Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of The Kept Woman

'Readers who were enthralled by B.A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors and Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl will love the skewed psychology and shifting perspectives in this domestic thriller.' - Library Journal

'A fiendishly clever romantic thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. This one will keep you guessing.' –Anita Shreve, New York Times bestselling author of The Stars are Fire

'A twisty, mind-bending novel about marriage and betrayal. A gripping plot and fascinating characters; this book will keep you turning the pages and guessing until the very end. A must-read!' –Lauren Weisberger, New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada

I wanted to love this book but the plot felt slowed down by too many unnecessary details. The narrator has a beautiful woman’s voice but I could not connect with her voice for the leading male character.

There were so many twists and turns, and the reader's voice sounded so similar for each of the main characters, that it was hard to follow. I think it would have been easier to read the book rather than listen to it.

I really enjoyed this book. Great twists and i love how well the story comes together. I highly recommend.

What a confusing and hard to follow book. At one point, all the different characters meshed into one, I do not recommend this book. What a waste of a free book!

The reader can keep everything in perspective as long as she keeps the title in mind when voices switch. The book was rough in the beginning but took off by the middle. Readers will be thinking about this long after they read the last word.

The Wife Between Us is a psychological drama more than it is a Psychological thriller. At times, it gives off a sense of urgency and mystery, but the mysteries and urgency all seem to be anti-climactic in the end. Some of the plot twists are a little bit more predictable than I believe the authors intended, but still well written. It is a great portrait of modern entanglements that make for an interesting story even with out the expected suspense. The characters are well drawn and the culture around the story seems rich and realistic. Overall, I enjoyed the story. I really loved the narration. Julia Whelen is able to tell a story without intruding upon it and her voice is pleasant -- I will actually choose my audio books at times by who is reading it, and I would read any book read by Ms Whelen.

It was pretty good... The narrator was great and believable. I just got a little tired of the piousness of the Nellie character at times, but I was intrigued! Thank you!

Very confusing. Too many unnecessary twists and turns that didn’t hit the mark. You had no idea what was real and what wasn’t. After awhile you just stopped caring.

Profile Avatar
Latasha A.

It was good but is this isn’t really a thriller.

This was a good book with plenty of twists and definitely kept me interested. However, the constant jumping timeframes to retell the actual truth behind a particular scene (after the scene has already happened) made it a little confusing as a listener. The first big twist is the best with the rest paler in comparison. Finally, I truly love the narrator and all the different female voices she can do, but I could not get past the male voices. They are just not believable, even though she’s really good at changing it up. Overall, though, worth a listen.

Loved this book! I love the way the first half was written and how you think you know what’s going on and then there’s a twist! This one kept me thinking all the way to the end. The narrators voice was a good one and didn’t irritate me the way some do! Definitely recommend this book!

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the character development of Nellie, and how the story began to unravel without flaw. There were no holes in the story line, with plenty of twists and unexpected turns.

I could not stop listening. Very well done. Kept you guessing

Too many twists for the sake of having twists, but they don't add to the storyline. Overall this was just okay, nothing new at all, it was just narrated in a different way to try to fool the reader/listener. Very typical of the genre.

The story kept me intrigued. The beginning it gave the impression that it was the stories of two different people. Once it came together, it kept my attention. The narrator made me giggle despite the story reaching a dramatic climax. This was the case once my husband pointed out that the narrator sounded like Candace Bergen when speaking for the men in the story. So...if you were wondering what Murphy Brown was up to...

Narrator was super impressive but the stores was so long I kept waiting for the height of the storyline and it just disappointed me. The twist wasn’t as enthralling as I expected and the storylines were complicated but I was able to follow with a bunch of rewinds

I grew so very tired of how it dragged on, in uninteresting ways, and the narrator’s attempts at doing the man’s voice were too distracting for me.

I really liked this book, I kind of found the opposite of some reviewers as I found the beginning to be slower, but by the time the first twist in the first third of the book happened, I was very intrigued and then listened to the rest quite quickly after that. Near the end I couldn’t stop listening. It was slow at times, but overall I really enjoyed it and have recommended it to my mom.

This book is about as original as a Lifetime movie, but no where near guilty pleasure. Frankly, I was bored. The characters become so unlikeable and make such obvious, irritating choices that I found myself feeling obligated to just get through it. I don't understand the hype.

I enjoyed this book - and a well done thriller is always fun - and this one did keep me mostly engaged, the writing well done, but I didn’t feel satisfied until the brilliant ending twist. Make it to the epilogue and it will feel like a worthwhile listen!

A lifetime movie in an audio book. I enjoyed the story and wanted to know more. The reader did her best at creating a voice for each character but the different voices ended up sounding cheesy.

Profile Avatar

the book was interesting. certainly didn't go the way I expected. the narrator was good at differentiating each character.

Profile Avatar
J R.

Very slow start, about ready to give up when the action started. It took a long time to realize that there were 2 'voices' narrating this story, just had to figure it out from context. Once we got that determined, and the action got going it was a good book. Maybe it could have been a great read, not sure.

Profile Avatar
Shawna V.

This book kept me interested wanting to know what happened next. However, there was an air of familiarity about it and it was somewhat predictable towards the middle and end. The plot twist at the end shook me but not entirely.

Profile Avatar
Don H.

It was very hard to follow, and slow to develop, All the female characters sounded alike, and made it hard to know who the story was following, and jumping back and forth in time didn't help.

Profile Avatar
Colleen B.

Amazing listen, beginning to end. Great narration. I'm hooked on audio. Story was an intense psychological thriller. With it being through listening as opposed to reading, it some how felt real. Equally I could relate very much to parts of the story. Think a lot of us have played some of these roles ourselves. Well done to the editor and author.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SUSPENSE NOVEL, THIS AINT IT! I downloaded this book because it was suggested based on my previous suspense novel interest. This is a fine book about a woman going through some tough stuff (no spoilers), but NO SUSPENSE. There is a small “climax” that happens about 1/3 of the way in and it’s alllll downhill from there. Can’t say I enjoyed it. Maybe if I had gone in expecting no suspense I would’ve enjoyed it more, but there’s so many women centered suspense novels out there, if that’s your thing, skip this one.

I expected more from this book after reading the reviews. It was not nearly as good as The Girl on the Train as some have compared it to. I kept waiting for something more explosive to happen. Lots of twists and turns, which I did like, but at one point I did get confused about who was best friends with Sam. I had to go back and re-read a few times.

The book was decent. That might be a stretch to be honest. The biggest twist for me came in the middle of the book. I literally was like "whoaaaa I did not see that coming". And I was excited to dive into the latter half of the book. And it let me down page after page after page. I was expecting a huge climax....something having to do with one of the main characters sister.....and yet....it just never came. Completely let down. It almost felt like the writers were so freaking stoked to be writing this amazing "psychological thriller" and half way through, their families decided to take a winter ski trip so they had to rush to complete the book instead of closing so many windows that were open. If the book could have ended half way through, and it gave you the option to write your own ending it would have been better. There is nothing new and exciting about an abusive spouse. It is a dried up thriller that should have died with the famous Julia Roberts movie Sleeping with the Enemy. The beginning got 5 stars. The end got 0. So I had to balance it out somehow. 3 Stars is generous. Also....what the heck was up with the narrator and the male voices in this book??? She made every dude sound like The Royal Duke or Yorkshire or something. So bizarre. She started the book at such a vigorous pace I had to keep bumping back 30 seconds to wrap my head around things that were being said. By the middle of the book it seems her pace slowed. Which made the narration better, but the book stayed the same. Dull. Loose. Predictable. Here is the thing....I would never tell someone not to read/listen to books because I think that every book should be read. Just pretend the ending you come up with in the middle of the book is what actually happens and then listen to the last half of the book every time you vacuum. Or Mow the yard. Or something like that, to drown out the not great ending, until it is over. Because the ending you come up with in your head is the right one.

Loved the book, I sat in the car listening even after arriving at my destination. I guess the equivalent of not being able to put it down?? The narrator’s voice was pleasant but I truly disliked ‘Richard’s’ voice. Not enough to be off put by the narrator but enough to be relieved when she spoke in her own tone again.

When I first started this book, I could not for the life of me figure out where it was going, all the little details and nuances were so confusing to me; I didn't know who Emma was, who Nellie was; but as I got more and more into it, I actually really liked it. It was surprising how the twists and turns play out and they played out really well.

Profile Avatar
Charity W

Absolutely loved the twist and turns. The narrator is incredible!

Profile Avatar
Elizabeth B

(Spoiler alert) One of the biggest problems with this novel is the marketing. The very description of the book tells you not to believe what you are reading and therefore the reader is constantly on the look out for the deception. When it is finally revealed, it is not as surprising as it could be because we have been warned that there is a twist coming. Having said that, this particular twist was more original than most and although it is fairly obvious from the start that Richard is controlling it is fun to learn how much Vanessa really was in charge of the dissolution of her marriage.

Profile Avatar
Tonya B

The book was very well written and super intriguing. The narrator did a great do with the female voices but the male voices drove me crazy. Her attempts at a male voice were dismal and took away from the theme.

I thought this book was poorly written, confusing at times and it really dragged on. Too many small details that didn't contribute to the story. She tried too hard with the plot twists.
