PJ McDermott was born in Scotland and spent his youth in the town of Paisley, near Glasgow. As a boy he would plunk school and head to the local library to read any book he could get his hands on, especially adventure and science fiction. His favorite authors were Asimov, Herbert, Niven, Moorcock, and Le Guin. The book he most enjoyed was Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.
