Lucy S. Dawidowicz (1915-1990) traveled to Poland to work at the Yiddish Scientific Institute in 1938, but fled just before Hitler's invasion in 1939. After returning to the United States, she taught modern Jewish history at Yeshiva University, Stanford University, and SUNY Albany.
